Biography

Cemal Gürsel was born on October 13, 1895, in Hınıs, a small town in eastern Anatolia. He chose a military path, studying at Kuleli Military High School and later graduating from the Turkish Military Academy. During his early service, Gürsel fought in the Turkish War of Independence, earning the Medal of Independence and the Gallipoli Star for his efforts. He married Melahat Gürsel and moved up the ranks over the years.

Gürsel's military career covered several important times in Turkish history. He worked in various roles within the Turkish Armed Forces, gaining both operational and administrative experience. By the 1950s, he had reached senior command positions and grew concerned about Turkey's political direction under the Democratic Party government of Adnan Menderes. His increasing opposition to the government's policies and authoritarian actions led him to organize a military intervention.

On May 27, 1960, Gürsel led a bloodless military coup that ousted the Menderes government. The coup was carried out by a group of officers known as the National Unity Committee, with Gürsel at their helm. They claimed that the Democratic Party had violated the constitution and threatened the country's secular democratic system. After the coup, Gürsel served as head of state and government in the provisional military administration.

After overseeing the creation of a new constitution, Gürsel became a civilian leader when Turkey returned to democracy in 1961. He was elected as the fourth President of Turkey by the Grand National Assembly and served until 1966. His presidency aimed to stabilize Turkish democracy with stronger checks and balances in the new constitution. Gürsel's health began to fail during his time as president, and he passed away in Ankara on September 14, 1966, while still in office.

Before Fame

Growing up during the last years of the Ottoman Empire, Gürsel saw his homeland change from a falling empire into a modern republic. He chose a military career, which was a path open to ambitious young men from Anatolia during this time of change. Military academies offered education and social mobility to students from rural areas.

The early 20th century in Turkey was a time of ongoing war, revolution, and building a new nation. Young officers like Gürsel were influenced by their experiences in the Turkish War of Independence and the efforts that followed to create and protect the new Turkish Republic. This group of military officers developed a strong sense of responsibility as protectors of Atatürk's secular, modern vision for Turkey.
