Biography

Chibly Langlois was born on November 29, 1958, in La Vallée-de-Jacmel, a commune in Haiti's Sud-Est department. He studied at the Pontifical Lateran University in Rome, one of the oldest pontifical universities, where he focused on theology and canon law. This education set the foundation for a career that would take him to the top of the Catholic hierarchy in Haiti.

Langlois was ordained as a priest and worked his way up through the ranks of the Haitian Catholic Church over the years. His pastoral and administrative skills were recognized, and in 2011 he became the Bishop of Les Cayes, a diocese in Haiti's southern peninsula. This happened during a difficult time for Haiti, as the country was still dealing with the aftermath of the massive earthquake in January 2010 that killed about 200,000 people and displaced millions.

On February 22, 2014, Pope Francis made Langlois a cardinal during a gathering in Rome. This appointment made him the first and only Haitian cardinal in the Catholic Church, a title he still holds in 2023. Notably, he was the only cardinal in that 2014 group who was a bishop, not an archbishop, highlighting Pope Francis's personal decision to honor him and the people of Haiti.

Besides his duties in Les Cayes, Langlois has been the president of the Haitian Bishops' Conference, which organizes the Catholic Church's efforts across Haiti. In this job, he has addressed social justice, rebuilding, and humanitarian issues in Haiti, which is one of the Western Hemisphere's poorest countries. His roles as both a diocesan bishop and a national leader make him a key figure in Haitian Catholic life.

Langlois holds a unique spot in global Catholicism as Haiti's only representative in the College of Cardinals, which advises the pope and elects a new one when needed. His role in the College shows both the worldwide reach of the Catholic Church and the importance Pope Francis places on raising voices from developing countries.

Before Fame

Chibly Langlois grew up in La Vallée-de-Jacmel, a small, mountainous area in southeastern Haiti. During the late 1950s and through the 1960s and 1970s, Haiti faced political repression under the Duvalier family's rule, severe poverty, and a lack of institutional infrastructure. For many Haitians at that time, the Catholic Church was one of the few stable institutions that provided education, community support, and moral guidance. In this environment, choosing to become a priest held both spiritual and social significance.

After his initial training locally, Langlois went on to study at the Pontifical Lateran University in Rome, joining a small group of Haitian clergy who received advanced theological education in Europe. This international education expanded his knowledge and connected him to broader ideas in the Catholic Church after Vatican II, preparing him for a leadership role in the Church in Haiti.
