Biography

John Dramani Mahama was born on November 29, 1958, in Damongo, Ghana, and was the first president of Ghana born after the country's independence in 1957. He attended Ghana Senior High School and Achimota School, then went on to the University of Ghana. Mahama started his career in public service and as a historian before getting into politics. He is married to Lordina Mahama and has made a name for himself as both a politician and writer.

Mahama began his political journey as a Member of Parliament for the Bole/Bamboi constituency in 1997 and served until 2009. While in parliament, he held several ministerial positions, starting as Deputy Minister for Communication from 1997 to 1998, and then as Minister for Communications in 1998. His skills and political insight led to his selection as running mate to John Atta Mills in the 2008 presidential election.

After the National Democratic Congress won in 2008, Mahama became Vice President under President John Atta Mills from 2009 to 2012. His vice presidency was cut short when President Mills died on July 24, 2012, making Mahama the first vice president to take over the presidency following a president's death in office. He finished Mills' term and won the December 2012 election, serving as president from 2013 to 2017.

During his presidency, Mahama faced challenges such as economic issues and the need for infrastructure development. He lost his re-election bid in 2016 to Nana Akufo-Addo from the New Patriotic Party, becoming the first sitting president in Ghana to lose a second-term election. He stayed active in politics and ran again as the NDC's presidential candidate in 2020, losing to Akufo-Addo once more. However, Mahama made a historic return in the 2024 election, defeating incumbent Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia. He became the first president in Ghana to be re-elected to a non-consecutive second term, returning to office in January 2025.

Throughout his career, Mahama has received many international awards for his service, such as the Order of the Star of Ghana, Order of the Volta, Pushkin Medal, Grand Cross of the National Order of Benin in 2013, and the Friendship Medal in 2011. Aside from politics, he continues to engage in writing and historical research, contributing to Ghana's intellectual community while serving in public roles.
