Biography
Tahir Teimurovitsch Salakhov was born on November 29, 1928, in Baku, the capital of Soviet Azerbaijan. He attended the Azim Azimzade Art School in Baku and then continued his studies at the Surikov State Academic Institute of Fine Arts in Moscow, one of the top art schools in the Soviet Union. His education put him at the heart of Soviet artistic progress during the postwar years, and he became a leading figure in the severe style movement. This movement focused on honest, unidealized portrayals of Soviet workers and everyday life, standing in contrast to the more triumphalist imagery of Stalinist socialist realism.
Before Fame
Salakhov grew up in Baku during a time of big political changes and industrial growth in Soviet Azerbaijan. The city's oil wealth and mix of Azerbaijani, Russian, and broader Caucasian cultures influenced his early artistic style. He first studied at the Azim Azimzade Art School, named after a famous Azerbaijani cartoonist, before moving on to the Surikov Institute in Moscow. There, he trained with some of the top Soviet painters of the postwar era. This move from Baku to Moscow put him in the middle of important Soviet art discussions at a key time.
