Biography

Dissanayaka Mudiyanselage Jayaratne, widely known as D. M. Jayaratne or by his nickname 'Di Mu,' was a Sri Lankan politician born on 4 June 1931 in Colombo. He received his early education at Gampola Zahira College and went on to become one of the longest-serving members of the Sri Lankan Parliament. A founding member of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP), he dedicated the entirety of his political career to that organization and its affiliated coalitions, building a reputation as a steadfast party loyalist over more than four decades in public life. He passed away on 19 November 2019 in Kandy at the age of 88.

Jayaratne was first elected to Parliament in 1970, representing the Matara District, and he would continue to hold that seat through multiple electoral cycles spanning the following decades. His longevity in Parliament was a reflection of the deep political roots he cultivated in the southern region of Sri Lanka. Over the years he held various ministerial positions within SLFP-led governments, accumulating administrative experience that would eventually position him for the country's second-highest executive office.

The apex of Jayaratne's political career came when President Mahinda Rajapaksa appointed him Prime Minister of Sri Lanka in April 2010. He served in that role until January 2015, when Rajapaksa's government was defeated in the presidential election. As Prime Minister, Jayaratne operated within a constitutional framework that placed the bulk of executive authority in the hands of the President, making the office largely ceremonial in practical terms. Nevertheless, he carried out his duties as head of government in Parliament and represented the administration in legislative proceedings throughout this period.

Jayaratne's tenure as Prime Minister coincided with the immediate post-war years following the end of Sri Lanka's long civil conflict in May 2009. The country was navigating a complex process of reconstruction, reconciliation, and political consolidation under the Rajapaksa administration. Jayaratne, as a senior figure within the ruling coalition, was part of the government machinery that oversaw these transition years. His presence in cabinet reflected the administration's reliance on veteran SLFP figures to provide continuity and institutional experience.

After the change of government in 2015, Jayaratne retired from the most active phases of political life, though he remained a recognized elder figure within the SLFP. He died on 19 November 2019 in Kandy, having lived through the entirety of independent Sri Lanka's political history from the colonial twilight to the modern era. His career spanned some of the most turbulent and transformative decades in Sri Lankan history, and he remained a figure associated with the older generation of SLFP politicians who shaped the party's character in the twentieth century.

Before Fame

D. M. Jayaratne was born in 1931 in Colombo during the final years of British colonial rule over Ceylon. He was educated at Gampola Zahira College, an institution that reflected the diverse educational landscape of mid-century Ceylon, where schools associated with different religious and community groups played a central role in shaping public figures. Growing up in the 1940s, Jayaratne came of age during the independence movement and witnessed Ceylon's transition to self-governance in 1948, formative experiences that informed his later political orientation.

Jayaratne's path to prominence ran through the Sri Lanka Freedom Party, which he helped found and which positioned itself as an alternative to the more elite-associated United National Party. His association with the SLFP from its earliest days gave him deep organizational ties and ideological grounding in Bandaranaike-era politics, which emphasized Sinhalese nationalist sentiment, socialist economic policy, and a non-aligned foreign policy stance. By the time he was first elected to Parliament in 1970, he had established himself as a dependable and durable constituency figure in the Matara District of southern Sri Lanka.
