Biography
Danilo Medina Sánchez was born on November 10, 1951, in Bohechío, Dominican Republic. He is an economist and politician who was the country's President from 2012 to 2020. A member of the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD), Medina spent many years in the party and government roles to reach the presidency. He studied at the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo and later at the Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo (INTEC), where he gained economic knowledge that shaped his policies as president.
Medina's path to the presidency was built on a solid background in government work. He was Chief of Staff to the President twice, from 1996 to 1999 and again from 2004 to 2006, giving him deep insights into how the government functions. In the May 2012 presidential election, Medina won with 51% of the votes against former president Hipólito Mejía, starting his eight-year presidency.
His time in office was noted for successful elections and policies aimed at economic growth and improving infrastructure. In 2016, Medina won a landmark electoral victory, leading a coalition to defeat Luis Abinader with 61.8% of the votes, the highest for any freely-elected president since Horacio Vásquez in 1924. Unlike his predecessors, such as Juan Bosch and Leonel Fernández, Medina was particularly known for his practice of visiting poor rural areas every week to tackle social inequality.
Medina ended his second term with a 65% approval rating, though controversies did arise. He abandoned plans for a third term after facing international pressure, including from U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. After his presidency ended in 2020, his family, including two brothers, faced legal issues involving corruption charges related to influence and state contracts during his leadership. In 2017, he was awarded the Order of Excellence for his service to the Dominican Republic.
Before Fame
Danilo Medina was born in Bohechío, a small town in the western Dominican Republic, during a time of political change in the country. He grew up after the assassination of dictator Rafael Trujillo in 1961, a period marked by political upheavals in the 1960s and 1970s. This backdrop of democratic change likely influenced his decision to pursue economics and politics.
Medina attended two of the Dominican Republic's top universities. His economics studies gave him valuable analytical skills for his political career, especially in tackling the nation's development challenges. He became involved with the Dominican Liberation Party early on, which was one of the country's major political groups as it was forming and growing, paving the way for his future national leadership.
