Biography

Darwin Gabriel Núñez Ribeiro was born on June 24, 1999, in Artigas, Uruguay, a city near the Brazilian border in the country's northwest. Growing up in modest conditions, he quickly developed a passion for football, which led him through Uruguay's competitive youth football system. His talent caught the attention of Peñarol, one of Uruguay's notable clubs, whose youth academy laid the groundwork for his professional career. He joined Peñarol's first team in 2017, kicking off a fast rise through South American and then European football.

In August 2019, Núñez moved to Europe when the Spanish Segunda División club Almería signed him for a club record fee. His performances in Spain soon caught the eye of bigger clubs, and in 2020, Portuguese club Benfica signed him for €24 million, making it the most expensive signing in Portuguese football history at that time. At Benfica, he became one of Europe's top forwards. In his second season, he was the top scorer in the Primeira Liga, scoring 26 goals in 28 league games. He was also named in the Primeira Liga Team of the Year and won the Primeira Liga Player of the Year award, proving to be one of the continent's most sought-after strikers.

Liverpool of the English Premier League signed Núñez in the summer of 2022 for €75 million (about £64 million), making him one of the most expensive South American players in football at that time. He wore the number 9 shirt at Anfield and became a key player in the club's attack over the subsequent seasons. His time at Liverpool led to significant domestic success, including a Premier League title in the 2024–25 season. After that win, he was transferred to Saudi Pro League club Al-Hilal for €53 million (£46 million), continuing his career in a new league.

Internationally, Núñez has been a regular player for Uruguay. He got his first senior call-up in 2019 and scored in his debut against Peru. Although he missed the 2021 Copa América due to injury, he played for his country at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar and the 2024 Copa América, establishing himself as a key player for the Uruguayan national team.

Before Fame

Darwin Núñez grew up in Artigas, a Uruguayan border city with strong connections to both Uruguayan and Brazilian culture. Even though he was far from the football hotbeds of Montevideo, he showed exceptional talent from a young age. He started his path to professional football at Peñarol's youth academy in Montevideo, a program that has turned out some of Uruguay's best players.

Núñez joined Peñarol's first team in 2017 when he was just 17, giving him early experience in competitive South American football. His performances in Uruguay's top division caught European attention, and by 2019, at only 20, he moved to Spain, kicking off an international career that would quickly gain momentum in the following years.
