Biography
David Josué Jiménez Silva was born on January 8, 1986, in Arguineguín, a small coastal town in Gran Canaria, Spain. Known as a central or attacking midfielder, he also played as a winger or second striker throughout his career. Considered one of the best players of his generation, Silva was known for his exceptional balance, ball control, calmness under pressure, and a passing ability that few could match.
Silva started his senior professional career with Valencia, spending seven years there from 2004 to 2010. During his time, he became one of La Liga's most creative midfielders, helping Valencia win the Copa del Rey in 2008. His consistent performances caught the eye of some of Europe's biggest clubs, leading to his transfer to Manchester City in the summer of 2010, a move that became a defining chapter in his career.
At Manchester City, Silva played in over 400 matches over ten years, becoming one of the most celebrated players in the club's history. He won four Premier League titles, two FA Cups, and five League Cups, and was named in the PFA Team of the Year three times. He is the fastest player to reach 200 wins in the Premier League. His impact on City's rise to dominance in English football was huge, and he remained a crucial player under several managers, particularly during Pep Guardiola's long tenure.
Silva left Manchester City in 2020 and returned to Spain to join Real Sociedad, where he won another Copa del Rey title that same year. However, an anterior cruciate ligament injury during preseason training cut his time in San Sebastián short, leading him to retire from professional football in July 2023.
On the international stage, Silva played for Spain from his debut in 2006 until he retired from the national team in 2018. Alongside Xavi Hernández and Andrés Iniesta, he was part of one of football's most celebrated midfield groups, helping Spain win three consecutive international tournaments: UEFA Euro 2008, the 2010 FIFA World Cup, and UEFA Euro 2012. Silva earned over 100 caps for Spain, scoring 35 goals to rank fifth on the country's all-time scoring list, and provided 29 assists, placing him second in Spain's all-time assist records. He received the Gold Medal of the Royal Order of Sports Merit for his contributions to Spanish sport.
Before Fame
David Silva grew up in Arguineguín, a fishing village on the southern coast of Gran Canaria in the Canary Islands. Raised in a modest setting away from the big football hubs of mainland Spain, he honed his skills through youth football and caught the eye of scouts from Valencia. He joined Valencia's academy and worked his way through the youth levels, gaining early senior experience with loans to Eibar, Celta Vigo, and Getafe before fully joining Valencia's first team.
Silva rose to prominence during a time when Spanish football was changing its style. The national game was moving toward a possession-based, skillful approach that would soon take over European and world football. Silva's natural talents — quick feet, great spatial awareness, and the ability to keep the ball in tight spaces — fit perfectly with this new style, making him a key player in Spain's successful period.
