Biography
Denis Dmitriyevich Cheryshev was born on 26 December 1990 in Nizhny Novgorod, Russia. His father, Dmitri Cheryshev, was a professional footballer who played for clubs like Sporting CP and Villarreal, so Denis grew up surrounded by football. This connection, especially with Spanish football, significantly influenced his career path.
Denis joined Real Madrid's youth academy and made his debut for the reserve side in 2009. He eventually joined the first team in 2012, but due to tough competition, he didn't get consistent chances at Real Madrid. He was loaned to Sevilla before moving to Villarreal, where he began to excel as an attacking wide player known for his dribbling and finishing. After loan spells at Villarreal and Valencia, he permanently joined Villarreal in 2016 and then moved to Valencia on loan in 2018, signing with them permanently in June 2019.
Internationally, Cheryshev played for Russia in various youth categories, earning 45 caps and scoring 23 goals before joining the senior team in 2012. His standout moment came during the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia. Cheryshev impressed everyone by coming off the bench to score twice in the opening match against Saudi Arabia. He scored four goals in the tournament, helping Russia reach the quarter-finals, exceeding many expectations.
After Valencia, Cheryshev moved to different clubs seeking regular playtime. He also played for Russia in UEFA Euro 2020, held in 2021 due to a pandemic-related delay. Later, he joined the Cypriot First Division club Krasava ENY Ypsonas, continuing his career in a new setting. Throughout his career, he was known in European football for his speed, skills, and goal-scoring ability from wide positions.
In recognition of his contributions to Russian football, especially during the 2018 World Cup, Cheryshev received the Russian Federation Presidential Certificate of Honour in 2018 and was named an Honoured Master of Sports of Russia the same year.
Before Fame
Denis Cheryshev was born into a football family in Nizhny Novgorod, a big city in central Russia. His father, Dmitri Cheryshev, played football professionally and his career took the family to several countries, including Spain. This meant Denis spent much of his early life immersed in Spanish football. This early exposure to high-level coaching and tactics was crucial to him developing as a player.
Noticing his talent, Real Madrid brought Cheryshev into their youth academy, one of the most competitive in the world. Moving up the ranks there required not just skill but also consistency and resilience, which he showed by making it to the first team. His rise to prominence took time, marked by loan moves that gave him experience with different clubs and leagues in Spain before he became a reliable top-level player.
