Biography
Diego Roberto Godín Leal was born on February 16, 1986, in Rosario, Uruguay. He started his professional football career with Cerro, a well-known club in Montevideo. Later, he moved to Nacional, a team in Uruguay's Primera División, where his standout performances as a center-back caught the eye of scouts from Europe. His poise, skill in the air, and game awareness made him an outstanding defensive prospect early on.
Before Fame
Growing up in Rosario, a small town in the Flores Department of Uruguay, Godín learned football in a country with a strong football culture despite being small. Uruguay has consistently produced top defenders and midfielders despite its population size. Godín started at the club Cerro and then moved up to Nacional, where he improved his skills against tougher local opponents. This caught the attention of Villarreal, who signed him and brought him to La Liga.
