Biography
Dinesh Chandra Rupasinghe Gunawardena was born on March 2, 1949, in Colombo, Sri Lanka, into a well-known political family. His father, Philip Gunawardena, was a key figure in Sri Lanka's left-wing political movement and played a major role in politics after the country's independence. His aunt, Vivienne Goonewardene, was also influential in leftist and trade union circles. Growing up in this environment, Gunawardena was deeply involved in Sri Lankan progressive politics from an early age, shaping his beliefs and dedication to leftist governance.
Gunawardena went to school at Royal College, Colombo, one of Sri Lanka's top educational institutions. He continued his studies abroad at the University of Oregon in the United States, where he became an outspoken advocate for peace during the Vietnam War. He also studied at Nyenrode Business University in the Netherlands. These international experiences broadened his political outlook and reinforced his stance against militarism and imperialism, central themes throughout his public career.
He entered electoral politics in 1983, winning a seat in Parliament for Maharagama and, later, Colombo. That same year, he became the leader of the Mahajana Eksath Peramuna, the left-wing party his father had led, and has been in that role ever since. His first ministerial position was under Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickremanayake as Minister of Transport. Over the years, Gunawardena held various cabinet positions in different governments, showing he could navigate changing political landscapes while keeping his party's unique character.
Gunawardena's most notable role came in 2022, during a severe economic and political crisis in Sri Lanka. After President Gotabaya Rajapaksa resigned amid large protests, Parliament elected Ranil Wickremesinghe as president. Wickremesinghe appointed Gunawardena as Prime Minister. During this time, Gunawardena also served as Minister of Public Administration, Home Affairs, Provincial Councils and Local Government, and briefly led the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna from 2022 to 2023. He had been Leader of the House from 2020 to 2022. Gunawardena stepped down as Prime Minister in September 2024, ending a challenging tenure during one of Sri Lanka's most difficult political and economic times.
Before Fame
Growing up as the son of Philip Gunawardena, a co-founder of the Lanka Sama Samaja Party and later leader of the Mahajana Eksath Peramuna, Dinesh Gunawardena was deeply involved in leftist politics and trade union activism from a young age. The Gunawardena home was a gathering place for Sri Lanka's key progressive figures of the mid-twentieth century, giving him early exposure to political organizing, ideological debate, and parliamentary strategy.
His time at the University of Oregon in the late 1960s and early 1970s put him in the middle of one of the most politically active settings in the Western world. Student-led anti-war demonstrations were at their peak, and Gunawardena participated in the pacifist movement against the Vietnam War. These years abroad linked his Sri Lankan leftist roots to a wider global movement of anti-imperialism and social activism, shaping his views when he returned to Sri Lanka and eventually entered electoral politics after his father's passing.
