Biography

Dato Pandelela Rinong anak Pamg, born on March 2, 1993, in Bau, Malaysia, is a celebrated Malaysian diver known for her remarkable success in international competitions. She made history as the first Malaysian female athlete to win an Olympic medal and the first to secure an Olympic medal in a sport other than badminton. Her breakthrough came at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, where she earned a bronze medal in the women's 10-meter platform diving event, making her a national hero.

Pandelela started her international career early, representing Malaysia at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing at just 15, where she finished 27th in the 10-meter platform event. By the 2010 Commonwealth Games, she showed significant improvement by winning gold, establishing herself in the diving world. She was chosen as Malaysia's flagbearer for the 2012 Olympics, highlighting her rising status in Malaysian sports.

At the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Pandelela kept her momentum by winning silver in the 10-meter synchronized platform with her partner Cheong Jun Hoong. This added to her collection of international medals, including seven World Championships medals in various events. Her consistent top-level performance has made her one of Malaysia's most acclaimed athletes.

Outside her Olympic achievements, Pandelela studied at Universiti Malaya, balancing her studies with rigorous training. Her impact goes beyond sports, as seen in her recognition with awards like Asia's Most Influential Malaysia in 2021 and Gen.T Malaysia in 2017 and 2018. These honors highlight her significant influence on Malaysian society and her role as an inspiration to young athletes nationwide.

Before Fame

Pandelela Rinong grew up in Bau, a small town in Sarawak, and found her passion for diving at a young age, even though the region wasn't known for producing top aquatic athletes. Her talent and dedication helped her stand out, and she soon joined national training programs.

Competing internationally meant making big sacrifices and showing strong commitment, especially since Malaysia didn't have the diving facilities and coaching expertise of traditional diving countries. Her early growth as a diver matched Malaysia's efforts to expand its Olympic sports beyond badminton, opening doors for athletes in less developed sports.
