Biography
Donald Franciszek Tusk was born on April 22, 1957, in Gdańsk, Poland, during the communist era. He attended I Liceum Ogólnokształcące im. Mikołaja Kopernika w Gdańsku and then studied history at the University of Gdańsk. His political career started in 1989 with Poland's shift to democracy, when he co-founded the Liberal Democratic Congress party (KLD), supporting free market principles. He was elected to the Sejm in 1991 but lost his seat in 1993. After KLD merged with the Democratic Union in 1994 to become the Freedom Union, Tusk remained active in politics.
In 1997, Tusk was elected to the Senate and became its deputy marshal. His political clout increased when he co-founded the Civic Platform (PO) in 2001, a centre-right liberal conservative party that grew into a major political force in Poland. He reentered the Sejm and served as its deputy marshal. Although he lost his bids for President of Poland in 2005 and faced parliamentary defeat that year, Tusk's leadership of the Civic Platform was vital in their 2007 parliamentary election win.
He served as Prime Minister from 2007 to 2014, becoming the first Polish prime minister since the fall of communism to win re-election, securing another term in 2011. His time in office was marked by economic stability and Poland's deeper ties with European institutions. In 2014, he left Polish politics to become the president of the European Council, a role he held until 2019. From 2019 to 2022, he also led the European People's Party.
Though the Civic Platform lost both the presidency and parliament to the Law and Justice party in 2015, Tusk returned to Polish politics in 2021 to lead the Civic Platform once more. His political return was completed in 2023 when he became Prime Minister again, making him the longest-serving prime minister of the Third Polish Republic. Throughout his career, he has received many international awards, including the Charlemagne Prize in 2010 and various honors from countries around the world.
Before Fame
Growing up in Gdańsk during the communist era, Tusk saw the social and political tensions that eventually led to Poland's shift to democracy. His hometown was especially important as the birthplace of the Solidarity movement in 1980, which opposed communist rule. His education in history helped him understand the political changes happening in Poland and Eastern Europe.
The fall of communist governments across Eastern Europe in 1989 opened up new opportunities for young thinkers like Tusk to help build democratic institutions. By co-founding the Liberal Democratic Congress that same year, he put himself at the center of Poland's move to a market economy and democratic government, paving the way for his long political career.
