Biography

Egill Skallagrímsson was a Viking Age war poet, sorcerer, berserker, and farmer, living from about 904 to 995 AD in Iceland. His family was known for their violent tendencies and supernatural skills. Egill is celebrated in medieval Scandinavian literature as the anti-hero of Egil's Saga. His father, Skallagrím, was a Norwegian who left for Iceland due to conflicts with King Harald Fairhair, setting up their home in Borg á Mýrum in western Iceland.

Egill's life was full of violent events, poetic talent, and fierce independence. From a young age, he showed berserker traits and a talent for skaldic poetry, a type of Norse verse with complex wordplay and mythological references. Descriptions of Egill suggest he was striking and perhaps suffered from Paget's disease, which might explain his unique appearance. He had a rocky relationship with Norwegian royalty, especially King Eirik Bloodaxe and Queen Gunnhild, who became his enemies after several disputes and betrayals.

Some of Egill's key works include Höfuðlausn (Head-Ransom), a praise poem he wrote to save his life when King Eirik captured him in York, and Sonatorrek (The Irreparable Loss of Sons), a heartfelt lament for his dead sons, considered one of the best examples of skaldic poetry. He also wrote Arinbjarnarkviða to honor his friend and protector Arinbjörn. These poems show his skill in skaldic poetry and reveal his emotional depth, from skilled flattery to deep sorrow.

Besides his writing, Egill was a strong warrior who fought in many battles across Scandinavia and the British Isles. He worked as a mercenary, fought with various kings and jarls, and gained wealth through both fighting and legal settlements. His saga portrays him as capable of both intense violence and smart legal actions, reflecting the varied nature of Viking Age aristocracy. He died at Mosfellsbær in Iceland, living to about ninety years old, which was quite rare for his time.

Before Fame

Egill was born into a family known for their fierce nature and supernatural ties. His grandfather, Kveldúlf (Evening Wolf), and father, Skallagrím, were known for having shape-shifting and berserker traits. They left Norway because they opposed King Harald Fairhair's efforts to unify the country. The family moved to Iceland early in the land-taking period and became key settlers in the Borgarfjörður area.

From a young age, Egill showed exceptional talent in both poetry and fighting. His saga tells that he wrote his first poem at three and killed someone during a dispute at seven. He spent his early years mastering the complex art of skaldic poetry and developing the fighting skills needed to survive in Viking times. These early experiences in Iceland’s rugged environment, along with his family’s history of conflicts with Norwegian kings, influenced his later life as both a warrior-poet and a steadfast enemy of certain kings.
