Biography

Enrico Letta was born on August 20, 1966, in Pisa, Italy. He studied at the University of Pisa and Sant'Anna School of Advanced Studies, gaining a solid academic background that influenced his political path. Before stepping into politics, Letta worked as an academic, gaining skills that were beneficial in his later roles in government and international relations.

Letta started his political career in 1998 when he joined the Cabinet as Minister for the Community Policies. In 1999, he became the Minister of Industry, Commerce, and Crafts, showing his ability to handle complex policy issues. In 2001, he was elected to the Chamber of Deputies, moving from executive duties to a legislative role. From 2006 to 2008, he was Secretary of the Council of Ministers, strengthening his role in Italian politics.

As one of the founders of the Democratic Party (PD) in 2007, Letta helped shape Italy's center-left politics. He was elected Deputy Secretary of the party in 2009, becoming a prominent member. After the 2013 Italian election didn’t produce a clear winner, President Giorgio Napolitano asked Letta to form a national unity government to tackle Italy's economic and social issues stemming from the Great Recession.

Letta served as Prime Minister from April 2013 to February 2014, leading a coalition of his Democratic Party, the center-right People of Freedom party, and the centrist Civic Choice. His government focused on economic recovery, gained EU funds to address youth unemployment, and ended party funding in a major political finance reform. Letta also dealt with the early European migrant crisis after the 2013 Lampedusa shipwreck by starting Operation Mare Nostrum to patrol seas and rescue migrants. After his time as Prime Minister, he returned to lead the Democratic Party from March 2021 to March 2023 and continued to influence Italian politics while also working as Dean of the Paris School of International Affairs.

Before Fame

Growing up in Pisa during the 1970s and 1980s, Letta experienced a time of big political changes in Italy, marked by economic difficulties and the slow decline of the post-war political order. He studied at the University of Pisa and Sant'Anna School of Advanced Studies as Italy moved from the chaotic Years of Lead to a more stable democracy in the 1990s.

His rise in politics was influenced by Italy's need for expert governance in the 1990s, as the country dealt with European integration and economic modernization. His academic background suited him for the policy-focused roles that were common in Italian politics during this time of institutional reform and joining the European Union.
