Biography
Eugeniu Stătescu was born on December 25, 1836 (December 13 on the Old Style calendar) in Bucharest, in what was then the Principality of Wallachia. He went on to study law at the University of Paris, an important time that influenced his career and political views. After returning to Romania with a French legal education, Stătescu became known as a lawyer, journalist, and public figure during a crucial time in Romanian history, playing a part in the legal and political changes in a rapidly evolving nation.
Before Fame
Stătescu grew up during a time of major political change in the Romanian principalities. In the mid-1800s, Wallachia and Moldavia joined to form the United Principalities under Alexandru Ioan Cuza in 1859, and Carol I's reign started in 1866.
