Biography

Eva Elisabeth Moltesen, originally Eva Elisabeth Hällström, was born in 1871 in Joroinen, Finland. She was a writer, translator, peace activist, and lexicographer who worked across both Finland and Denmark. Moltesen studied at the University of Helsinki and moved to Denmark in 1896 for further studies. She married Danish Laust Jevsen Moltesen and settled in Denmark but stayed connected to her Finnish roots. She passed away in Ordrup, Denmark, in 1934.

Moltesen built a literary career in both Finnish and Danish, publishing in both languages and acting as a cultural bridge between the two countries. Her translation work brought Finnish literature and culture to Danish readers, and her writing in Finnish kept her linked to her home country's intellectual scene. She gave lectures about Finnish people, history, and culture to Danish audiences at a time when Finland, still part of the Russian Empire, wasn't well-known beyond basic impressions in Scandinavia.

One of Moltesen's key contributions was creating Finnish-Danish and Danish-Finnish dictionaries. These dictionaries were much-needed resources for people wanting to move between the two languages. Creating them required not just fluency, but a deep understanding of each culture's language style and usage. She also founded a Finnish Society in Copenhagen, creating a cultural hub for Finns in Denmark.

Moltesen was also active in the international women's peace movement. In 1915, during World War I, she helped establish Danske Kvinders Fredskæde, the Danish Women's Peace Chain, part of the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom. This group brought women together to oppose war and promote peaceful solutions to international conflicts, placing Moltesen at the heart of a major pacifist and feminist network during a turbulent time in Europe.

In 1918, Moltesen ran for office in the Danish national elections with the Venstre party, shortly after women in Denmark gained the right to vote and run for office in 1915. Although she didn't win, her candidacy put her among the first group of women to seek national office in Denmark. Her political involvement showed her dedication to civic engagement and international cooperation, reflecting the same values she held in her peace and cultural work.

Before Fame

Eva Hällström grew up in Joroinen, in the Savonia region of Finland, when Finland was an autonomous grand duchy within the Russian Empire. During the late nineteenth century, Finnish cultural and national identity was being actively discussed and developed, with writers, educators, and intellectuals working to define and strengthen Finnish culture. While studying at the University of Helsinki, she was surrounded by a lively environment focused on the Finnish language, literature, and national culture.

In 1896, she decided to move to Denmark to continue her education, which shaped the rest of her life. Although Denmark and Finland had Nordic cultural similarities, they were divided by language and politics, and Moltesen worked to connect the two. Her marriage to a Dane and her move to Copenhagen gave her a permanent base to pursue her goals as a writer in two languages and as an advocate for better understanding between her adopted and native countries.
