Biography

Georginio Gregion Emile Wijnaldum was born on 11 November 1990 in Rotterdam, Netherlands. A product of the Feyenoord youth academy, he made his senior debut for the club in 2007, becoming the youngest player ever to represent Feyenoord at that time. Over five seasons with the Rotterdam club, he made 134 appearances and won the KNVB Cup in 2008 before moving on to seek greater challenges elsewhere in Dutch football.

Wijnaldum joined PSV Eindhoven following his departure from Feyenoord, spending four seasons at the club. During his time at PSV, he claimed another KNVB Cup triumph in his first season and capped his final year with an Eredivisie title. That final season at PSV also saw him awarded the Dutch Footballer of the Year honor, cementing his reputation as one of the top midfielders in the Netherlands and attracting attention from clubs across Europe.

In the summer of 2015, Wijnaldum moved to the Premier League, signing for Newcastle United for a fee of £14.5 million. Despite a productive personal campaign in which he scored 11 league goals, Newcastle were relegated from the top flight, and Wijnaldum departed after just one season, joining Liverpool for £23 million in 2016. At Anfield, he adapted his game to a deeper midfield role under manager Jürgen Klopp, becoming a vital component of Liverpool's engine room. He appeared 237 times for the club and contributed significantly to one of the most successful periods in Liverpool's modern history, including scoring twice in the stunning Champions League semi-final second leg comeback against Barcelona in 2019, a match Liverpool won 4-0 to advance 4-3 on aggregate. He also started in the 2019 UEFA Champions League final victory and played an integral part as Liverpool won the UEFA Super Cup, FIFA Club World Cup, and their first English league title in 30 years during the 2019-20 season.

After his Liverpool contract expired, Wijnaldum signed for Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer in the summer of 2021. His time in France was disrupted by injury, and he spent the 2022-23 season on loan at AS Roma in Serie A before returning to PSG. He subsequently departed the French club to join Saudi Pro League side Al-Ettifaq in September 2023, where he serves as a captain.

At international level, Wijnaldum earned over 90 caps for the Dutch national team after making his debut in 2011, and he captained the side on multiple occasions. He was part of the Netherlands squad that finished third at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil and was a key figure as the Netherlands reached the final of the 2018-19 UEFA Nations League, finishing as runners-up. His combination of work rate, technical ability, and leadership made him one of the most respected Dutch players of his generation.

Before Fame

Georginio Wijnaldum grew up in Rotterdam, one of the Netherlands' most prominent football cities and the home of historic club Feyenoord. He entered the Feyenoord youth academy at a young age, developing his skills in a system known for producing technically refined and tactically educated players. Rotterdam's football culture, shaped by decades of Feyenoord tradition, provided a demanding environment in which young players were expected to compete at a high level from an early stage.

His progression through the Feyenoord academy was rapid enough to earn him a first-team debut in 2007 at just 16 years old, making him the youngest player ever to represent the senior side. This early breakthrough signaled a talent that would soon outgrow the domestic Dutch stage, with his performances for both Feyenoord and later PSV drawing increasing interest from some of Europe's leading clubs.
