Biography

Giulio Andreotti (1919-2013) was an Italian politician who played a major role in post-war Italian politics for over 50 years. He was born in Rome on January 14, 1919, and served as Italy's Prime Minister seven times during three periods: 1972-1973, 1976-1979, and 1989-1992. He was the 41st prime minister and the sixth-longest-serving since Italy unified. Leading the conservative faction of the Christian Democracy party, Andreotti was a key figure in Italy's First Republic.

He started his political career as a protégé of Alcide De Gasperi and quickly advanced to a cabinet position early on. Over his 40-year political journey, he held all major state offices and was a trusted figure to the civil service, business community, and Vatican. Domestically, he worked on controlling inflation after the 1973 oil crisis, founded Italy's National Healthcare Service, and fought terrorism during the Years of Lead. In foreign affairs, he supported Italy's joining the European Union and built stronger diplomatic ties with Arab countries.

Andreotti's political beliefs favored the Vatican, capitalist economics, and he was against the Italian Communist Party. He was a proponent of European integration and backed neoliberal economics, along with the European Social Fund and the European Regional Development Fund. His supporters praised him for handling Italy's political and social issues and for helping transform it into the world's fifth-largest economy. Critics, however, accused him of maintaining a patronage system that led to corruption.

At the height of his career, Andreotti faced serious legal issues when charged with collaborating with Cosa Nostra, the Sicilian Mafia, during the period of political turmoil marking the end of Italy's First Republic. Despite these controversies, Andreotti stayed influential in Italian politics up until his passing in Rome on May 6, 2013, at the age of 94. He was married to Livia Andreotti and was honored with several international awards during his career, including the Robert Schuman Medal and various orders of merit from multiple countries.

Before Fame

Giulio Andreotti was born into a middle-class family in Rome. He studied at Sapienza University of Rome, where he built the foundation for his political career. Early on, he got involved in Catholic student organizations, which brought him to the attention of Alcide De Gasperi, a key Christian Democratic leader who later became his political mentor.

After the war, Italy was focused on rebuilding, which opened doors for young, educated Catholics like Andreotti to enter politics through the Christian Democracy party. As Italy worked to restore its democratic institutions after fascism and World War II, the party needed skilled people who could handle the complex political environment while maintaining strong connections to the Vatican and Western allies.
