Biography

Gregorio Rosa Chávez was born on September 3, 1942, in Sociedad, El Salvador. He studied theology at the Université catholique de Louvain in Belgium, which laid the groundwork for his career in the Church. After becoming a priest, Rosa Chávez returned to El Salvador during a very challenging time in the country’s history. He was named Auxiliary Bishop of San Salvador in 1982 and held this role until 2022. During his time as bishop, he worked closely with Archbishop Óscar Romero, who later became a saint. Their partnership greatly influenced Rosa Chávez's ministry, especially his focus on social justice and helping the poor and marginalized. Both clerics risked their lives during El Salvador's civil war to protect civilians and speak out against human rights violations. Rosa Chávez's commitment to peace and reconciliation brought him international acclaim, including the Peace Prize of Hesse in 1996. His efforts went beyond the civil war, addressing larger issues of social inequality and systemic injustice in El Salvador. On June 28, 2017, Pope Francis named Rosa Chávez a cardinal, making him the first cardinal in El Salvador’s history. This was significant because cardinals are usually chosen from archbishops, showcasing the Vatican's recognition of Rosa Chávez's significant impact on the Church and society. As a cardinal, he held a higher rank in the global Church hierarchy than the Archbishop of San Salvador, though the archbishop remained in charge of local church matters.

Before Fame

Rosa Chávez grew up in El Salvador at a time of rising social and political tension that eventually led to civil war. During his early years, liberation theology was gaining traction in Latin America, focusing on the Church's duty to push for social justice and prioritize the needs of the poor. His education at UCLouvain introduced him to modern Catholic ideas and equipped him with theological skills that he later used to address the particular challenges in his country.
