Biography

Islam Abduganiyevich Karimov was born on January 30, 1938, in Samarkand, which was then part of the Uzbek Soviet Socialist Republic. He studied at the Tashkent State Technical University and the Tashkent State University of Economics, where he gained the technical and economic skills that would later guide his governance and state planning. Starting his career in the Soviet administrative system, he gradually advanced through the bureaucratic and party ranks, becoming one of the most important figures in Central Asian political history.

Before Fame

Karimov built his career within the Soviet system, working in economic planning and government administration in Uzbekistan in the 1960s and 1970s. He rose through party ranks and was appointed First Secretary of the Communist Party of Uzbekistan in 1989, leading the republic during the final years of the Soviet Union. Mikhail Gorbachev's reforms, growing nationalism in Soviet republics, and Moscow's weakening control allowed regional leaders like Karimov to gain independent power.
