Biography

Juan Moreno y Herrera-Jiménez, better known as Jean Reno, was born on July 30, 1948, in Casablanca, Morocco. His parents were Spanish and had fled Francisco Franco's regime. He holds French and Spanish citizenship and is one of the most recognizable figures in international French cinema. Reno's Spanish heritage is evident in his birth name, but he made his mark through the French film industry. He studied at Lycée Lyautey in Casablanca before moving to France, where he attended Lycée Carnot and trained at the well-known Cours Simon acting school in Paris.

Reno's career took off when he teamed up with director Luc Besson. He appeared in Besson's debut film Le Dernier Combat in 1983 and continued working with him in La Femme Nikita (1990) and most notably Léon: The Professional (1994). In Léon, he played a solitary hitman who forms an unexpected connection with a young girl. This role earned him a César Award nomination for Best Actor and international fame. He had earlier been nominated for a César for Best Supporting Actor for his part in The Big Blue (1988) and received another Best Actor nomination for Les Visiteurs (1993).

After his success with Léon, Reno smoothly transitioned to Hollywood. He acted alongside Tom Cruise in Brian De Palma's Mission: Impossible (1996) and later starred in John Frankenheimer's Ronin (1998) and Roland Emmerich's Godzilla (1998). His ability to convey quiet strength made him a popular choice for action films. He continued this path with movies like Crimson Rivers (2000), Wasabi (2001), The Pink Panther (2006), and The Da Vinci Code (2006), where he played Captain Bezu Fache alongside Tom Hanks. More recently, he appeared in Hector and the Search for Happiness (2014), The Promise (2016), and Spike Lee's Da 5 Bloods (2020).

Reno has been married three times: first to Geneviève Reno, then to Nathalie Dyszkiewicz, and later to Zofia Borucka. He has been honored by the French state for his contributions to culture and cinema. He was named a Knight of the Legion of Honour in 1999, promoted to Officer in 2008, and raised to Commander in 2024. He is also an Officer in both the National Order of Merit and the Order of Arts and Letters. Internationally, he won the European Film Academy Achievement in World Cinema Award in 2000 and the François Truffaut Award in 2012.

Before Fame

Jean Reno grew up in Casablanca during the last years of the French Protectorate in Morocco, in a household shaped by his family's experience of fleeing Spain due to Franco's dictatorship. This background of displacement and living between cultures influenced much of his personal identity. He attended Lycée Lyautey in Casablanca before moving to France as a young man, where he continued his education at Lycée Carnot.

In Paris, Reno trained as an actor at Cours Simon, one of France's well-known drama schools. He consistently worked in French theater and took on small film and TV roles throughout the late 1970s and early 1980s. His connection with Luc Besson eventually gave him the breakthrough opportunity that would define his career. His early stage work and smaller roles helped develop his disciplined, understated performance style, which would later make him stand out in major international films.
