Biography
Jordan Pierre Ayew is a French-Ghanaian professional footballer born on 11 September 1991 in Marseille, France. He currently plays as a winger or forward for EFL Championship club Leicester City and is the captain of the Ghana national team. Ayew is part of one of Africa's well-known football families, being the son of former Ghana captain and three-time African Footballer of the Year Abedi Pele, and the younger brother of fellow professional players André and Ibrahim Ayew.
Ayew started his professional career with Marseille in 2009 and made an immediate impact by scoring on his senior debut. After progressing at his hometown club, he had brief stints at other Ligue 1 teams Sochaux and Lorient. In 2015, Ayew moved to English football when he was signed by Aston Villa. Despite the club's relegation from the Premier League, Ayew performed well by finishing as their top scorer during his only full season, showing he could perform under pressure.
After his time at Villa, Ayew joined Swansea City, where he became the club's leading goalscorer in 2018, though this happened during another relegation campaign. His consistent performances despite these setbacks led to Crystal Palace signing him after Swansea dropped to the Championship. At Palace, Ayew became a key player, making over 200 appearances and providing reliable goals and creativity in their attack.
Internationally, Ayew has been a steady presence for Ghana since making his senior debut in 2010, after initially playing for France at youth levels. He has over 110 caps for the Black Stars and was named captain in 2025. His international career includes appearances in the 2014 and 2022 FIFA World Cups and six Africa Cup of Nations tournaments between 2012 and 2023. His most notable achievement with Ghana was in 2015 when the team reached the final of the Africa Cup of Nations, finishing as runners-up.
Before Fame
Growing up in Marseille as the son of Abedi Pele, a soccer legend in Ghana, Jordan Ayew was surrounded by football from the start. His father's fame in African football was both an inspiration and a source of pressure, and his older brothers, André and Ibrahim, also went on to become professional players. Even though he was born in France and initially played for the country at youth levels, Ayew stayed strongly connected to his Ghanaian roots, heavily influenced by his family.
Ayew grew up during a time when French football included more and more players with African backgrounds, with many choosing whether to play for France or their parents' countries. He decided to play for Ghana, which was both a reflection of his personal identity and a chance to follow in his father's footsteps as a key player for the Black Stars, rather than being just one of many talented players for France.
