Biography

Sviatlana Hieorhiyeuna Tsikhanouskaya (née Pilipchuk) was born on September 11, 1982, in Mikashevichy, Belarus. She studied at the Philological Faculty of the I. P. Shamyakin Moscow State University, where she built her background in languages and literature. After college, she lived a relatively private life as a translator and teacher, married to popular blogger and political activist Siarhiej Cichanowski.

Tsikhanouskaya's entry into politics in 2020 was unexpected and due to unusual circumstances. When her husband tried to run for president against longtime President Alexander Lukashenko, he was arrested along with other opposition leaders. Unable to run in his place, Tsikhanouskaya decided to enter the race herself. Lukashenko's administration allowed her candidacy, seemingly underestimating her as a political threat.

During her campaign, Tsikhanouskaya teamed up with two other women whose husbands were also barred from running, forming a groundbreaking opposition coalition. She called for constitutional reform, free and fair elections, and presidential term limits, promising to step down once these reforms were in place. Her campaign drew large crowds across Belarus, reflecting widespread dissatisfaction with Lukashenko's 26-year rule. When Lukashenko was declared the winner with over 80% of the vote, widespread protests broke out, with citizens and international observers condemning the election as rigged.

After the disputed election, Tsikhanouskaya was detained by Belarusian authorities and forced to leave the country. She fled to Lithuania, where she set up a government-in-exile and continued to lead the democratic opposition. From there, she established the Coordination Council in 2020 and later the United Transitional Cabinet in 2022, pushing for international diplomacy and sanctions against Lukashenko's regime. Lithuania recognized her as Belarus's legitimate head of state.

As the leader of the Belarusian opposition, Tsikhanouskaya has met with many world leaders and international organizations to push for democracy in Belarus and keep sanctions on the Lukashenko government. After Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022, she supported Ukraine while making sure global attention stayed on Belarus's fight for democracy. In 2023, the Belarusian government tried her in absentia and sentenced her to 15 years in prison, a move widely condemned internationally.

Before Fame

Before getting into politics, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya lived a quiet life working as a translator and English teacher, after studying philology. She was married to Siarhiej Cichanowski, a blogger and YouTuber known for criticizing the Belarusian government. Her rise to prominence happened unexpectedly when her husband was arrested in May 2020, ending his plans to run for president.

The 2020 presidential election in Belarus took place during a time when dissatisfaction with Alexander Lukashenko's decades-long rule was growing. Economic struggles, limits on civil freedoms, and the mishandling of the COVID-19 pandemic had led to public unrest. With traditional opposition candidates either arrested or banned from running, Tsikhanouskaya became an unexpected unifying figure, representing the hopes of everyday Belarusians for democratic change.
