Biography
Slaven Bilić, born on September 11, 1968, in Split, Croatia, is a well-known figure in Croatian football as both a player and manager. He started his professional career in 1988 with Hajduk Split, his local club, where he developed into a reliable defender. His skills soon caught the eye of European clubs, leading to successful periods with Karlsruher SC in Germany's Bundesliga, followed by moves to Premier League clubs West Ham United and Everton. Throughout his playing career, which ended in 2001, Bilić was known for his defensive strength, leadership, and tactical sense.
Internationally, Bilić played for Croatia during a successful period under coach Miroslav Blažević. From 1992 to 1999, he earned 44 caps and captained the team, helping to make Croatia a strong presence in international football after they became independent from Yugoslavia.
After retiring, Bilić moved into coaching, starting with Hajduk Split in the latter part of the 2001-02 season. He then managed Croatia's under-21 national team from 2004 to 2006, focusing on developing young talent for senior international play. His success with the youth team led to his role as manager of the senior Croatian national team.
As Croatia's national team manager, Bilić led the team to the quarter-finals of the 2008 European Championship, a highlight in Croatia's tournament history. He was praised for bringing young players from the under-21 team into the senior squad, ensuring growth and continuity in Croatian football. His time with the national team ended after the 2012 European Championship.
After his international role, Bilić continued his coaching career at clubs across various countries and leagues. He managed teams like Lokomotiv Moscow in Russia, Beşiktaş in Turkey, West Ham United and West Bromwich Albion in England, and Al-Ittihad and Al Fateh in Saudi Arabia, Beijing Guoan in China, and Watford in England. Through these roles, he showed his ability to adapt to different football cultures and styles while maintaining his reputation as a skilled tactical manager.
Before Fame
Growing up in Split during the 1970s and 1980s, Bilić was surrounded by a strong football culture, with Hajduk Split being the main sports team in the city. He studied at the University of Split while honing his football skills, balancing his academic growth with his athletic activities. The late 1980s were a turbulent time for Yugoslav football, as political tensions were rising and the federation was beginning to break apart.
Bilić started his professional football career in 1988, during the last years of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, when Yugoslav football was still very competitive internationally.
