Biography
Jordi Alba Ramos was born on March 21, 1989, in L'Hospitalet de Llobregat, near Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. As a left-back, he was seen as one of the best full-backs of his time, known for his speed, technical skill, and ability to work well with attacking teammates on the left. His style suited possession-focused systems, making him an important player for both club and country during a very successful time for Spanish football.
Alba started his football training at FC Barcelona's famous La Masia academy but was released as a teenager before reaching the main team. He didn't give up on his dreams and joined CE Cornellà, eventually moving to Valencia CF, where he became one of La Liga’s top left-backs. His impressive performances at Valencia got a lot of attention, especially during UEFA Euro 2012, where he scored in the final against Italy, helping Spain win the championship. That summer, Barcelona brought him back for about 14 million euros.
At Barcelona, Alba was a crucial part of the team for over ten years, forming a particularly strong duo with Lionel Messi. They developed an almost intuitive understanding on the left side of the field. During his time at the club, he won 16 major trophies, including five La Liga titles, five Copas del Rey, and one UEFA Champions League. He played under managers such as Tito Vilanova, Luis Enrique, Ernesto Valverde, Quique Setién, Ronald Koeman, and Xavi Hernández. After the 2022–23 season, his contract wasn't renewed, and he left the club after over 400 appearances.
Internationally, Alba played more than 90 times for Spain since his senior debut in 2011. Besides his Euro 2012 winners' medal, he took part in the FIFA World Cups of 2014, 2018, and 2022, and the European Championships in 2016 and 2020. He was named captain of the Spain team that won the 2022–23 UEFA Nations League, which was a fitting honor for his contributions to the national team. He announced his retirement from international football in 2023.
After leaving Barcelona, Alba joined Inter Miami CF in Major League Soccer, reuniting with former teammates Lionel Messi, Sergio Busquets, and later Luis Suárez. He announced he would retire at the end of the 2025 MLS season, wrapping up a nearly two-decade-long professional career at the top level of the sport.
Before Fame
Jordi Alba grew up in L'Hospitalet de Llobregat, a working-class city next to Barcelona that's known for producing several professional footballers. He joined Barcelona's La Masia academy, a famous youth development system, but was let go before reaching the senior team. Like many young players released by top academies, he had to find a new path through the lower levels of Spanish football.
When he moved to CE Cornellà, it gave Alba valuable competitive experience, which led Valencia CF to offer him a professional contract. The early 2000s and 2010s were a hugely successful time for Spanish football, with the national team winning three major international tournaments in a row between 2008 and 2012. Alba's rise matched this successful period, and his skills as an attacking full-back were a perfect fit for the high-tempo, short-passing style that had come to define both the Spanish national team and FC Barcelona.
