Biography

Juan Carlos Varela Rodríguez, born on December 12, 1963, in Panama City, Panama, grew up in a family with strong business ties. He studied industrial engineering in the United States and graduated from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1985. After that, Varela went back to Panama to join the family business, Varela Hermanos, a major liquor distribution company started by his grandfather in 1908. Under his leadership, the company grew significantly and became one of the largest beverage distributors in Central America.

Varela entered politics in the early 2000s, first serving as Minister of Foreign Relations under President Ricardo Martinelli from 2009 to 2011. However, disagreements on policy and corruption claims against the administration strained his relationship with Martinelli. As a result, Varela left to form his own political coalition for the 2014 presidential election. Running on an anti-corruption platform with the slogan 'Un Solo Corazón' (One Single Heart), he presented himself as a candidate aiming to bring honesty back to Panamanian politics.

In May 2014, Varela won the presidential election in a surprising upset, beating the ruling party candidate José Domingo Arias by about 2 percentage points. His win was mainly due to voters' dissatisfaction with the corruption scandals during Martinelli's administration and his pledge for transparent governance. On July 1, 2014, Varela took office as Panama's 50th president at age 50, facing challenges like economic inequality, infrastructure needs, and global pressure over financial transparency.

During his time in office from 2014 to 2019, Varela focused on modernizing the economy, developing infrastructure, and improving Panama's international image. His administration completed the Panama Canal expansion project, which had started under previous governments, and worked to tackle issues regarding Panama's role as a tax haven. Varela also addressed significant regional problems, like the Venezuelan refugee crisis and diplomatic tensions over financial transparency. His presidency ended on July 1, 2019, when he handed over power to his successor Laurentino Cortizo, continuing Panama's tradition of peaceful transitions of power.

Before Fame

Juan Carlos Varela was born into the well-known Varela family business. He grew up during some intense political changes in Panama, like Manuel Noriega's dictatorship and the U.S. invasion in 1989. His early years were marked by Panama's shift to democracy and the gradual takeover of the Panama Canal from the U.S.

Varela studied engineering at Georgia Tech and then spent over 20 years building up the family business. He turned Varela Hermanos from just a regional distributor into a multinational company. His business achievements gave him the financial freedom and public recognition he needed to start a political career. His education abroad and business background also made him a modernizing influence in Panama as the country experienced rapid economic growth in the 2000s.
