Biography
Jerónimo de la Ossa was born on April 9, 1847, in Panama City, when the isthmus was part of the Republic of New Granada. He became one of the most well-known figures in Panamanian cultural and civic life, gaining fame as a romantic poet, lyricist, civil engineer, and diplomat. His work spanned literature, public service, and infrastructure, showing the broad ambitions typical of educated men of his time in Latin America. He died in Panama City in 1907, just a few years after seeing the birth of the independent Panamanian nation he had often celebrated in his poetry.
Before Fame
De la Ossa went to Chile for his higher education and studied civil engineering. During the mid-nineteenth century, many ambitious young men from well-known Panamanian families did the same because local schools didn't offer much in professional training. When he returned home, he used his technical skills and social connections to carve out a career in various areas. His brother, José Francisco de la Ossa, was the mayor of Panama City, indicating that their family was well-regarded in society and politics, which probably helped Jerónimo in his public career.
