Biography
Rubén Blades Bellido de Luna was born on July 16, 1948, in Panama City, Panama. He became one of Latin America's most influential cultural figures, achieving extraordinary success in music, acting, law, and politics. His musical career truly took off with his U.S. debut in 1970 with the Pete Rodriguez orchestra on the album 'De Panamá a New York.' Blades transformed salsa music by adding sophisticated storytelling, political awareness, and literary depth, turning it from just dance music into social commentary. His songwriting included elements of Central American nueva canción and Cuban nueva trova, creating what critics called 'thinking persons' dance music.' His most famous piece, 'Pedro Navaja,' became a landmark in Latin music with its cinematic storytelling and urban realism. Throughout his music career, Blades released many acclaimed albums like 'Buscando América,' 'Escenas,' 'Caminando,' and 'Son de Panamá,' earning him 12 Grammy Awards and 12 Latin Grammy Awards from 21 nominations. His acting career started in 1983 with significant roles in Hollywood films such as 'Predator 2' (1990), 'The Milagro Beanfield War' (1988), 'Safe House' (2012), and 'The Counselor' (2013). He was especially recognized for his role as Daniel Salazar in the television series 'Fear the Walking Dead' from 2015-2017 and 2019-2023, earning three Emmy Award nominations for various television performances. Besides entertainment, Blades pursued academics by graduating from Harvard Law School and stayed active in Panamanian politics. In 1994, he ran a strong campaign for the Panamanian presidency, gaining 17% of the vote. Ten years later, President Martín Torrijos made him Minister of Tourism, a role he held from 2004 to 2009. He is married to actress and singer Luba Mason.
