Biography

Karekin II, originally named Grigor Nersesyan, was born on August 21, 1951, in Voskehat, Armenia. He is the Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of All Armenians, leading the Armenian Apostolic Church. He has been in this role since 1999, guiding millions of Armenian Christians worldwide. His leadership has covered significant changes both in Armenia and for Armenians around the world.

He studied at the Gevorkian Theological Seminary in Etchmiadzin, which is the main school for Armenian clergy, and later continued his theological studies at the University of Bonn in Germany. These educational experiences, combining traditional Armenian theology and European theological ideas, have influenced his approach to leading the church and engaging in interfaith discussions.

Karekin II became Catholicos after Karekin I passed away in 1999, at a time when Armenia was adjusting to the changes following the end of the Soviet Union. As Catholicos, he not only leads the Church spiritually but also helps maintain its importance in Armenian national and cultural life. He has focused on rebuilding church structures, reaching out to Armenian communities abroad, and representing Armenian Christianity internationally.

In 2013, Karekin II gained significant recognition by becoming the Oriental Orthodox head of the World Council of Churches, serving for eight years. This position put him at the heart of global Christian discussions and highlighted the importance of the Armenian Apostolic Church among other Christian groups. Throughout his time in office, he has participated in diplomatic and interfaith activities, meeting with leaders from other Christian churches, heads of state, and international groups.

He has received numerous honors from different countries and institutions, such as the Order of St. Mesrop Mashtots, the Order of the Badge of Honour, the Order of Friendship, the Order of the Star of Romania, the Order of Prince Yaroslav the Wise (5th class), Commander of the Legion of Honour from France, the Order of Bethlehem, the Order of Honour, the Ellis Island Medal of Honor, and the Order of Alexius. These various honors show his standing in the church and his involvement with international communities.

Before Fame

Karekin II was born in 1951 in Voskehat, a village in Soviet Armenia, at a time when the Armenian Apostolic Church was under the strict control of the Soviet government. Religious institutions in the USSR were closely monitored, with clergy and believers navigating limits on public worship and theological education. Despite these challenges, the Catholicosate of Etchmiadzin kept operating, maintaining its connection to Armenian Christian tradition.

His journey to church leadership started with theological training at the Gevorkian Theological Seminary at Etchmiadzin, the historic center of Armenian Christianity. He later studied at the University of Bonn, expanding his theological knowledge beyond the Soviet Armenian setting. His progress through the ranks of the Armenian Apostolic Church included rising ecclesiastical duties, ultimately leading to his election as Catholicos in 1999 after the death of Karekin I.
