Biography

Katrín Jakobsdóttir was born on 1 February 1976 in Reykjavík, Iceland. She studied at the University of Iceland, building a strong academic foundation that would shape her political career. Her education, along with her commitment to environmental issues and social equality, made her a unique voice in Icelandic politics early on.

Katrín advanced in the Left-Green Movement, becoming deputy chairperson in 2003 and chairperson in 2013. She was elected to Iceland's parliament, the Althing, for Reykjavík North in 2007 and held the seat until 2024. Before becoming prime minister, she was the minister of education, science, and culture, and of Nordic cooperation from February 2009 to May 2013, gaining valuable executive experience.

In December 2017, Katrín became Iceland's second female prime minister, after Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir, who served from 2009 to 2013. She led a coalition government focused on climate action, gender equality, and social welfare. Her time in office was marked by consistently high public approval ratings, and she was seen as one of Iceland's most trusted politicians. A 2015 poll, conducted before her term as prime minister, found that 59% of Icelanders considered her the most trustworthy politician.

On 19 February 2020, Katrín was named Chair of the Council of Women World Leaders, recognizing her as a key female head of government. She continued to lead Iceland through challenges like the global COVID-19 pandemic while maintaining its reputation as a forward-thinking Nordic nation.

In April 2024, Katrín stepped down as prime minister to run for the presidency of Iceland. She came in second, receiving 25.1% of the popular vote. Her bid for the presidency showed her ongoing ambition to serve Iceland at the highest levels, and her strong showing highlighted her lasting popularity with the Icelandic people.

Before Fame

Katrín Jakobsdóttir grew up in Reykjavík during a time when Iceland was going through major social and economic changes. The country was becoming more connected with European institutions and there was a growing awareness of environmental issues in the Arctic. She studied at the University of Iceland, where she developed her interest in politics, literature, and environmental issues. Growing up in one of the world's most educated societies gave her a chance to seriously engage with questions of sustainability and social justice.

Her rise in politics took shape through her involvement with the Left-Green Movement, a party started in 1999 that brought together environmental and left-wing traditions in Icelandic politics. By 2003, she was deputy chairperson of the party, showing her quick rise within its ranks. She was elected to the Althing in 2007, and her role as a cabinet minister from 2009 onward made her a well-known national figure long before she became the country's leader.
