Biography

Sir Keir Rodney Starmer was born on September 2, 1962, in Southwark, London, and grew up in Surrey. He went to Reigate Grammar School and later studied at the University of Leeds, where he got a Bachelor of Laws degree in 1985. He then earned a Bachelor of Civil Law degree from St Edmund Hall, Oxford, in 1986. After his studies, Starmer became a barrister, focusing on criminal defense and human rights, which shaped his public image for many years.

Starmer's legal career progressed steadily in the 1990s and 2000s. He worked as a human rights adviser to the Northern Ireland Policing Board, helping with policing reforms during a sensitive time in Northern Ireland's history. In 2002, he was made Queen's Counsel, marking his status as a top barrister. His career took a major step forward when he became Director of Public Prosecutions and head of the Crown Prosecution Service in 2008, staying in the role until 2013. During that time, he oversaw key prosecutions, like those connected to the Stephen Lawrence murder case. For his contributions to law and criminal justice, he was knighted as a Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath in the 2014 New Year Honours.

In 2015, Starmer switched from law to politics, winning the Holborn and St Pancras seat in the general election. He strongly supported the Remain side during the 2016 EU referendum, and as Shadow Brexit Secretary under Jeremy Corbyn, he pushed for a second Brexit referendum. After Labour's big loss in the 2019 general election and Corbyn's resignation, Starmer ran for leadership and won, becoming Labour Party Leader in April 2020.

As Leader of the Opposition from 2020 to 2024, Starmer aimed to move Labour toward the political center after years of internal strife and election losses. He focused on tackling antisemitism, which had seriously hurt Labour's image under Corbyn. His efforts led to notable electoral progress, with gains in local elections in 2023 and 2024. In the 2024 general election, Labour achieved a landslide victory, ending fourteen years of Conservative rule and making Starmer the Prime Minister. He is married to Victoria Starmer, and they have children. In 2025, he was named to the Time 100 list of the world's most influential people.

Before Fame

Keir Starmer grew up in Surrey and was interested in politics from a young age, which hinted at a future in public life. He went to Reigate Grammar School, which laid the groundwork for his university studies. He earned law degrees from the University of Leeds and Oxford at a time when human rights law was becoming more important in British legal circles, especially with the upcoming European Convention obligations.

After becoming a barrister, Starmer mainly worked in criminal defense, dealing with cases that combined law and civil rights. His advisory work with the Northern Ireland Policing Board gave him a front-row seat in one of Britain's most politically sensitive reform processes, offering him experience beyond typical legal work. By the time he was named Queen's Counsel in 2002, he had made a name for himself as a leading human rights barrister of his generation.
