Biography
Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan (7 September 1948 – 13 May 2022) was the second President of the United Arab Emirates and the ruler of Abu Dhabi from 2004 until his passing. He was born in Al Ain as the eldest son of Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the founding president of the UAE. Educated at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in the UK, Khalifa was prepared from an early age for leadership in Abu Dhabi's ruling circle. He married Shamsa bint Suhail Al Mazrouei and took on several top governmental and military roles before becoming president.
As his father's health declined in the late 1990s, Khalifa began to take over presidential duties while serving as crown prince of Abu Dhabi. When Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan passed away on 2 November 2004, Khalifa officially became the ruler of Abu Dhabi, and the Federal Supreme Council elected him president of the UAE the next day. His rise to power was smooth and indicated a continuation of the country's pro-Western, development-focused foreign and domestic strategies.
During his time as president, the UAE greatly diversified its economy, moving away from oil dependency and establishing Abu Dhabi as an international center for culture and education. He oversaw the creation of the Louvre Abu Dhabi, New York University Abu Dhabi, and Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi. He was also instrumental in founding Etihad Airways, which became a leading international airline. On 4 January 2010, the world's tallest man-made structure, formerly known as Burj Dubai, was renamed the Burj Khalifa in his honor. That same year, he was awarded an Honorary Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Bath from the UK.
In January 2014, Khalifa had a stroke and underwent surgery, after which he kept a lower public profile. Though he kept his ceremonial presidential duties, his half-brother Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan took over daily governance of Abu Dhabi. Even with his reduced role, Khalifa's name and formal leadership remained central to the UAE's government framework. In 2018, Forbes listed him among the world's most powerful people. He died on 13 May 2022 in Abu Dhabi, and Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan succeeded him as president.

Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan was born on 7 September 1948 in Al Ain, a city in the interior of what would later become the UAE. As the eldest son of Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, then the governor of the Eastern Region of Abu Dhabi, Khalifa grew up amidst tribal leadership and early modernization. The discovery of oil was rapidly changing the area, and his upbringing was influenced by his father's political ambitions and developmental goals.
Khalifa received formal military training at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in the United Kingdom, which trained many future leaders from Gulf and Commonwealth countries. Upon returning to Abu Dhabi, he took on various military and governmental roles, preparing him for future leadership. By the time the UAE was formally formed in 1971, Khalifa was already deeply involved in Abu Dhabi's government, positioning him as the obvious successor to his father's authority.
