Biography
Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, born on July 15, 1949, in Dubai, UAE, comes from the ruling Al Maktoum family. He received military training at the Mons Officer Cadet School in the UK, which equipped him for future leadership in the UAE government. After completing his training, he returned to Dubai to take on growing responsibilities in the emirate's administration and development projects.
In 2006, Mohammed became the Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE, as well as the ruler of Dubai, after the death of his brother Maktoum bin Rashid Al Maktoum. With his leadership, Dubai began transforming into a major global business and tourism hub, focusing on strategic investments in infrastructure, aviation, and hospitality.
Mohammed worked on reducing Dubai's economic reliance on oil. He helped create major government businesses like Emirates airline, DP World, and the Jumeirah Group. His vision brought about famous projects like the Palm Islands, the Burj Al Arab hotel, and the Burj Khalifa, which became the world's tallest building in 2010. These developments made Dubai a symbol of modern prosperity and innovation in the Middle East.
In addition to his political and business roles, Mohammed is a skilled equestrian who founded the Godolphin racing stable and owns Darley, a horse breeding operation in six countries. In 2012, he won the FEI World Endurance Championship, riding his horse Madji Du Pont over a 160-kilometer course. His love for equestrian sports is rooted in traditional Bedouin heritage and also promotes Dubai internationally in sports. Mohammed has been married to Hind bint Maktoum bin Juma Al-Maktoum, Princess Haya bint Al-Hussein of Jordan, and Houria Ahmed Lamara. His personal life has at times drawn international attention due to legal disputes over custody and allegations of misconduct.
Before Fame
Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum was born into the ruling Al Maktoum family when Dubai primarily relied on pearl diving, fishing, and trading. The discovery of oil in the 1960s happened during his early years, providing the financial base for his ambitious development plans. His education at the Mons Officer Cadet School in the UK introduced him to Western military and administrative practices, which he later applied to modernize Dubai.
When the United Arab Emirates was formed in 1971, it created a federal system that allowed Mohammed to be both the ruler of Dubai and hold senior positions in the federal government. In the 1980s and 1990s, he gained experience in various government and business roles, preparing him for a broad urban development strategy after 2006. His early involvement in equestrian sports also helped him build international connections, which were valuable in promoting Dubai globally.
