Biography

Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan was born on May 6, 1918, in Abu Dhabi, which at the time was a small and poor sheikhdom along the Arabian Gulf. He became the governor of the Eastern Region in 1946, operating out of Al Ain, where he earned a reputation as a fair and capable leader. He focused on improving the area's infrastructure, agriculture, and social services long before oil changed the region's fortunes. During his time in Al Ain, he showed his belief that natural resources, especially water, should be used to help everyday people, a philosophy he would later apply nationwide.

In August 1966, Zayed replaced his older brother Sheikh Shakhbut bin Sultan as the ruler of Abu Dhabi after a smooth transition backed by family members and the British government. Shakhbut had been hesitant to use the emirate's growing oil revenue for development, prompting the family to decide on a leadership change. Zayed quickly moved to modernize Abu Dhabi, channeling oil profits into hospitals, schools, roads, and public housing. This transformed a modest coastal area into a modern state within a few years.

Zayed's biggest achievement was uniting seven separate sheikhdoms into the United Arab Emirates on December 2, 1971. Through patient diplomacy, personal connections, and a willingness to share Abu Dhabi's large oil wealth, he convinced the rulers of Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Fujairah, and Ras Al Khaimah to form a federal state. Zayed was chosen as the first president of the federation and remained in that role until his death on November 2, 2004. He was re-elected every five years without interruption, showing both his authority and the support he had from the other rulers.

Outside politics, Zayed was committed to environmental conservation and cherished Bedouin traditions like falconry and poetry. He wrote poetry in classical Arabic, and his work was widely respected and recited across the Arab world. He was also a notable philanthropist, funding development projects in Africa, Asia, and other parts of the Middle East, earning him international recognition. Among his wives were Hassa bint Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Nahyan, Mouza bint Suhail Al Khaili, and Fatima bint Mubarak Al Ketbi. He had many children, several of whom have held senior government positions in the UAE.

Zayed passed away in Abu Dhabi on November 2, 2004, after leading Abu Dhabi for 38 years and overseeing the UAE federation for 33 years. In 2005, he was posthumously awarded the Champions of the Earth prize by the United Nations Environment Programme for his dedication to the environment. In the UAE, he is officially honored as the Father of the Nation, and his image and legacy continue to be vital parts of the country's national identity.

Before Fame

Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan grew up in Abu Dhabi when the area mainly relied on pearl diving and limited trade. Oil hadn't yet changed the Gulf, and life there was marked by Bedouin traditions, tribal ties, and tough desert and coastal conditions. His early education focused on Islamic learning and oral traditions, including poetry, which he pursued throughout his life.

When he became the governor of the Eastern Region in 1946, he moved to Al Ain, an inland oasis town that served as his testing ground. Over 20 years, he earned a reputation for settling tribal disputes, developing water resources, and improving community conditions with limited resources. This time influenced his governing style and showed he could lead across tribal and family lines, skills that would later be crucial in unifying the nation.
