Biography
James David Rodríguez Rubio, born on July 12, 1991, in Cúcuta, Colombia, started his professional journey with Envigado in Colombia's top league before moving to Argentine club Banfield in 2008. His impressive play in Argentina caught the eye of European clubs, leading to a move to Porto in Portugal in 2010. During his three years at Porto, Rodríguez made a name for himself as one of Europe's top young talents, winning several domestic titles and earning the Portuguese Golden Ball in 2012.
In 2013, he joined AS Monaco in the French Ligue 1 and gained worldwide attention during the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil. Playing for Colombia, he shone as the tournament's breakout star, scoring six goals to win the Golden Boot and helping his nation reach the quarterfinals. His stunning volley against Uruguay won him the FIFA Puskás Award for the best goal of the year. These performances led Real Madrid to sign him for a then-record £63 million for a Colombian player.
At Real Madrid, Rodríguez initially did well, winning the UEFA Champions League in 2016 and being named to the La Liga Team of the Season in his first year. However, his playing time decreased under new managers, leading to a two-year loan at Bayern Munich from 2017 to 2019. In Germany, he revitalized his career, helping Bayern win two Bundesliga titles and reach a Champions League semifinal.
After returning to Real Madrid, Rodríguez looked for more playtime and moved to Everton on a free transfer in 2020, reuniting with former Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti. After a year in the Premier League, his career took him to several countries, with stints at Al-Rayyan in Qatar, Olympiacos in Greece, and São Paulo in Brazil. In 2024, he briefly returned to Europe with Rayo Vallecano before heading to Mexico with León, then joined Major League Soccer club Minnesota United.
Throughout his international career, Rodríguez has been a key player for the Colombian national team, earning over 100 caps and serving as captain. He played for Colombia in two World Cups (2014, 2018) and several Copa América tournaments, becoming one of the most well-known figures in Colombian football. His marriage to Daniela Ospina, sister of Colombian goalkeeper David Ospina, added to his prominence in Colombian sports culture.
Before Fame
Rodríguez grew up in Cúcuta, a city on the border with Venezuela. He was mainly raised by his mother and stepfather after his biological father left when he was young. His stepfather, Juan Carlos Restrepo, was a big influence, helping him develop his football talent and supporting his early career. Rodríguez joined the youth academy of Envigado, a Colombian club that helps develop young players, and worked his way up.
He made his professional debut with Envigado in 2008 at age 17. His big break came later that year when he moved to the Argentine club Banfield. Competing in Argentina's tough league, Rodríguez improved his technical skills and tactical understanding, which became key parts of his playing style. His impressive performances in the Argentine Primera División caught the eye of European scouts, leading to his move to Porto and his rise to international fame.
