Biography

Luis Alberto Suárez Díaz was born on January 24, 1987, in Salto, Uruguay. Known as 'El Pistolero' (the Gunman), Suárez is considered one of the best strikers ever. He has scored over 600 goals and made more than 300 assists for both club and country. With 69 goals, he's the fourth highest-scoring South American in international football, trailing only Pelé, Neymar, and Lionel Messi.

Suárez started his senior career at Uruguayan club Nacional in 2005, then moved to Dutch club Groningen in 2006. He joined Ajax in 2007, where he won the KNVB Cup and the Eredivisie, making a name for himself as a top European forward. This led to interest from the Premier League, and in January 2011, he joined Liverpool for about £22.8 million. At Liverpool, he won the League Cup in his first full season and had one of the Premier League's most outstanding seasons in 2013–14, tying the goalscoring record for a 38-game season. That year, he won the Premier League Golden Boot, the Premier League Player of the Season, the PFA Players' Player of the Year, and the European Golden Shoe, scoring 31 league goals as Liverpool narrowly missed the title by two points.

In 2014, Barcelona bought Suárez for £65 million, making him one of the priciest players ever. At Barcelona, he teamed up with Lionel Messi and Neymar to form the famous MSN attacking trio, which became one of football's most effective front lines. In his first season, Barcelona won the treble: La Liga, the Copa del Rey, and the UEFA Champions League. In his second season, Suárez scored 59 goals in 53 matches, leading Barcelona to another domestic double. He received the Pichichi Trophy for top scorer in La Liga and his second European Golden Shoe in 2016, becoming the first player other than Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo since 2009 to win both awards at the same time. He was also named in the FIFA FIFPro World11 during this period.

After leaving Barcelona in 2020, Suárez joined Atlético de Madrid and played a key role in their La Liga win in the 2020–21 season. He later played for Nacional, Grêmio, and again at Club Nacional de Football, before moving to Inter Miami in Major League Soccer. Suárez represented Uruguay in four FIFA World Cups and was crucial in their 2011 Copa América win. His international career is marked by remarkable talent as well as controversy, including incidents at the 2010 World Cup and bans related to biting opponents and a racism charge.

Before Fame

Luis Suárez grew up in Salto in northwestern Uruguay as part of a big working-class family. They moved to Montevideo when he was a child, where he honed his football skills in the capital's youth scene. He joined the youth academy of Nacional, one of Uruguay's well-known clubs, and made his first senior appearance for the team in 2005 at 18.

He started his professional career in the Netherlands, first playing for Groningen and then Ajax. During this time, Dutch football was a key stepping stone for young South American talent. At Ajax, his impressive goal-scoring and intensity reminded many of the club's famous attacking players, and everyone saw he was heading for the top levels of European football.
