Biography

Marcelo Brozović, born on November 16, 1992, in Zagreb, is a Croatian footballer known for being a key player for Croatia over the past decade. He's played in many major tournaments for his country and is important to both his club and national teams. His career began at Hrvatski Dragovoljac and then moved through several Croatian clubs before gaining international recognition at Inter Milan.

Brozović started his professional career with his childhood club Hrvatski Dragovoljac in 2011, playing 22 games in a challenging season that ended in relegation. After this, he joined Lokomotiva for a season, where he helped secure a mid-table position. In August 2012, he moved to Dinamo Zagreb, Croatia's top club, where he spent three years honing his skills as a central midfielder. His performance there led to a loan move to Inter Milan in January 2015.

The spell at Inter Milan was significant for Brozović's career. After 18 months on loan, Inter bought him permanently for €5 million in 2016. Over seven seasons, he played in more than 300 games and became essential to Inter's midfield. In 2021, he was key in helping Inter win their first Serie A title in over ten years, ending Juventus's nine-year streak. He also played important roles in Inter's journeys to two major European finals: the Europa League in 2020 and the Champions League in 2023.

For Croatia, Brozović debuted in June 2014 and became a regular in the national team. He's played in three FIFA World Cups (2014, 2018, and 2022) and three UEFA European Championships (2016, 2020, and 2024). His standout tournament was the 2018 World Cup, where Croatia reached the final and finished second to France. He also helped Croatia reach the 2023 UEFA Nations League final. In summer 2023, Brozović moved to the Saudi Pro League, joining Al-Nassr for €18 million, starting a new phase in his career in the Middle East.

Before Fame

Growing up in Zagreb during the 1990s and early 2000s, Brozović was coming of age when Croatian football was finding its post-independence identity. He joined the youth academy of Hrvatski Dragovoljac, a club deeply connected to Zagreb's football culture, where he honed his technical skills and game knowledge. The club gave him his first professional opportunity in 2011, though it was a tough time as the team was relegated from the top league.

The early 2010s were a time of change for Croatian football, with the old guard from the 1998 World Cup, where they placed third, making way for new talent. Brozović came up as Croatia was trying to build a new golden generation that would reach the 2018 World Cup final. He progressed through Zagreb clubs Hrvatski Dragovoljac, Lokomotiva, and Dinamo Zagreb, following a typical path for Croatian players. This allowed him to grow in familiar surroundings before moving into European football.
