Biography

Mariano Díaz Mejía, known as Mariano, is a Spanish-Dominican footballer born on August 1, 1993, in Premià de Mar, Catalonia, Spain. A forward known for his speed and goal-scoring skills, Mariano plays for the Dominican Republic national team, even though he was born and raised in Spain. His dual background has influenced both his identity and his international career path.

Mariano started his professional career with Badalona, debuting in 2011 before catching the eye of one of the world's most prestigious clubs. He joined Real Madrid's academy soon after, working his way through the C-team and then Real Madrid Castilla, the reserve side. His standout performances in the reserve team were highlighted during the 2015–16 season when he became the top scorer in the Segunda División B, Spain's third tier, showing the goal-scoring instinct that would define his career.

This form earned him a spot on Real Madrid's first team, where he was part of a squad that achieved great success in the 2016–17 season, winning La Liga, the UEFA Champions League, and the FIFA Club World Cup. Although mostly a squad player, being part of such a successful team showcased his quality. After that season, French club Olympique Lyonnais signed him, where he impressed in Ligue 1, scoring often enough for Real Madrid to use a buyback option and bring him back in 2018.

Mariano's second period at Real Madrid spanned five seasons, but injuries limited his appearances and kept him from becoming a regular starter. Despite these issues, he remained part of the team and contributed when needed. In 2023, he left Real Madrid and spent a season with Sevilla before moving to Deportivo Alavés in La Liga, continuing his career. Throughout his time in top-level European football, Mariano proved to be a reliable and dangerous forward capable of making key contributions.

Before Fame

Mariano Díaz Mejía grew up in Premià de Mar, a coastal town in the Maresme region of Catalonia, where he started developing his football skills at a young age. Catalonia is known for producing skilled players, and Mariano's talent as a forward was evident early on. This talent eventually led him to the youth programs of professional clubs in the area.

When he moved to Badalona as a teenager, he found a place to make his professional debut in 2011. Badalona, a modest Spanish club, offered young players the chance to develop without too much pressure. Real Madrid's scouts soon noticed him there and saw him as a valuable addition to their youth and reserve system, setting the stage for his career at some of Europe's top football clubs.
