Biography
Memphis Depay was born on 13 February 1994 in Moordrecht, Netherlands. A Dutch professional footballer who plays as a forward, he has represented clubs including PSV Eindhoven, Manchester United, Olympique Lyonnais, FC Barcelona, Atlético Madrid, and Corinthians, while also serving as a player for the Netherlands national team. He is the all-time top scorer in the history of the Dutch national side, having netted 55 goals across his international career. Beyond football, Memphis has actively pursued a career as a rapper and recording artist, releasing music under his own name.
Memphis began his professional career at PSV Eindhoven, where manager Phillip Cocu played a significant role in his development. He scored 49 goals in 124 appearances across all competitions for the Eindhoven club. During the 2014–15 Eredivisie season, he finished as the league's top scorer with 22 goals in 30 matches and was instrumental in PSV winning the Eredivisie title, their first championship since 2008. He was named Dutch Footballer of the Year for his performances that season, and France Football recognized him as the Best Young Player in the world in 2015.
In June 2015, Memphis joined Manchester United for a reported transfer fee of £25 million. His time in England proved difficult, and he failed to establish himself as a regular starter at Old Trafford. In January 2017 he moved to French club Olympique Lyonnais, where he spent five seasons and rebuilt his reputation as one of Europe's most dangerous attackers. His consistent output in Ligue 1 attracted the interest of FC Barcelona, who signed him on a free transfer in 2021. During his second season at the Camp Nou, he contributed to the club winning La Liga and the Supercopa de España, though he subsequently transferred to Atlético Madrid in early 2023.
After his contract with Atlético Madrid concluded at the end of the 2023–24 season, Memphis signed with Brazilian club Corinthians in September 2024. He plays in the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A and helped the club win the Copa do Brasil in 2025. His international career has been equally distinguished. He was part of the Netherlands under-17 squad that won the 2011 UEFA European Under-17 Championship and made his senior debut in 2013. At the 2014 FIFA World Cup, he emerged as one of the tournament's standout performers as the Netherlands finished third overall.
Before Fame
Memphis Depay grew up in Moordrecht, a small town in the South Holland province of the Netherlands. He developed through the youth academies of the Royal Dutch Football Association system and came under the attention of PSV Eindhoven at an early age, working his way through their youth ranks before breaking into the first team. His upbringing was marked by personal hardship, including an absent father, which he has spoken about publicly and which informed much of his artistic output as a rapper alongside his sporting ambitions.
His path to prominence was shaped by the broader Dutch football tradition of technically skilled, attack-minded forwards, and he benefited from the mentorship of experienced coaches within the KNVB development structure. Representing the Netherlands at under-17 level and winning the 2011 European Championship at that age group signaled his potential early. By the time he broke through at PSV under Phillip Cocu, it was clear that he possessed the combination of pace, technical ability, and goal-scoring instinct that would make him one of the Netherlands' most prominent footballers of his generation.
