Biography

Mohammad Nadir Shah was born on April 9, 1883, in Dehradun, which was part of British India at the time. He belonged to the Musahiban branch of the Barakzai dynasty. Although his family was exiled from Afghanistan, they kept strong connections with Afghan political life. Growing up, Nadir was well-aware of the complexities of Afghan politics and the tensions involving British India and the Russian Empire. His early education prepared him for a career in the military and diplomacy, eventually placing him at the heart of Afghan national affairs.

Nadir Shah climbed the ranks of the Royal Afghan Army to become one of its most notable generals. His reputation as a military leader was largely built during the Third Anglo-Afghan War of 1919, where he commanded Afghan forces on the southern front and achieved significant victories against British forces. This success gained him considerable respect in Afghanistan and helped lead to the recognition of Afghan independence. Later, he served as the Minister of War under King Amanullah Khan, becoming a key figure in the Afghan government in the 1920s.

Despite his influential position, Nadir Shah eventually disagreed with Amanullah Khan on policies. He was then appointed as the Afghan Ambassador to France, which distanced him from power in Kabul. While in Europe, Afghanistan plunged into a civil war from 1928 to 1929, largely due to Amanullah's drastic modernization efforts. The conflict resulted in the Tajik rebel leader Habibullah Kalakani, known as Bacha-i Saqao, taking control of Kabul and declaring himself king. Amanullah abdicated and fled.

Seizing the opportunity, Nadir Shah returned to Afghanistan with support from Pashtun tribal forces and launched a military campaign against Kalakani. By October 1929, he captured Kabul and Kalakani was executed. Afghan tribal leaders declared Nadir Shah king, marking the start of his rule. Once in power, he quickly worked to restore order. He introduced a new constitution in 1931 that established some formal structure but kept most real power with the monarchy and his family.

Nadir Shah was careful in his modernization efforts, aiming to avoid the backlash that had harmed Amanullah. He developed infrastructure, reformed the army, and established schools but was careful not to upset conservative religious groups. His reign ended on November 8, 1933, in Kabul, when he was assassinated by Abdul Khaliq, a young student linked to his political opponents. He was succeeded by his son Mohammad Zahir Shah, who would go on to reign for forty years.

Before Fame

Nadir Shah was born in Dehradun while the Afghan royal family was in exile. He grew up during the Great Game, a time when Afghanistan faced strong pressures from the British and Russian empires. His early military training and ties with the Barakzai royal family influenced his understanding of power, loyalty, and governance in a deeply tribal and geopolitically complex nation.

He rose to prominence due to his notable military service, eventually taking a leading role in the Third Anglo-Afghan War of 1919. His success in the war made him a national figure and earned him the position of Minister of War. This role brought him into the Afghan government's inner circle as the country sought to define its sovereignty and future after World War One.
