Biography
Muhammad V, born on October 6, 1969, in Kota Bharu, Kelantan, Malaysia, is the 29th Sultan of Kelantan and a former King of Malaysia. He became Sultan of Kelantan on September 13, 2010, after his father, Sultan Ismail Petra, suffered a debilitating stroke. His rule began in Kelantan but soon also included the national stage. Muhammad V was educated in Europe, attending the European Business School London, Regent's University London, and St Cross College, giving him exposure to international views early in life.
Before Fame
Born into the royal family of Kelantan, Muhammad V grew up during a time of major political and social changes in Malaysia. As the son of Sultan Ismail Petra, he was prepared from a young age to eventually lead one of Malaysia's most culturally unique states. Choosing to study in London put him among a group of Southeast Asian royals who wanted Western education while staying connected to their traditional roots. This mix of European academic learning and Kelantanese royal customs influenced his way of governing before he officially took power.
