Biography

Nechirvan Idris Barzani was born on September 21, 1966, in Barzan, a mountainous area in northern Iraq that has been home to the Barzani family for generations. He is the nephew of Masoud Barzani, the long-time leader of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), and the grandson of Mustafa Barzani, a well-known Kurdish nationalist leader. Growing up during a challenging time for Kurds, Nechirvan was influenced by their ongoing fight for autonomy and recognition in Iraq. He attended the University of Tehran, where he was exposed to the region's politics and culture during a crucial time.

Nechirvan Barzani made his way up in the Kurdistan Democratic Party, becoming one of its key figures. In 2010, he became the Vice President of the KDP, a role he still has. His political career is largely defined by his time as Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), which he served in two terms: from March 2007 to August 2009, and again from March 2012 to May 2019. During his leadership, he worked on governance, economic planning, and diplomacy for the Kurdistan Region.

As Prime Minister, Nechirvan Barzani played a crucial role in stabilizing and developing the Kurdistan Region after the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq in 2003 altered the country's political landscape. He aimed to draw foreign investment, enhance the region's oil and gas industry, and balance relations with Baghdad while advocating for the Kurdistan Region's rights. His term also covered the rise of ISIS in 2014, a challenge that put significant pressure on the KRG.

In June 2019, the Kurdistan Region Parliament elected Nechirvan Barzani as the second President of the Kurdistan Region, following his uncle Masoud Barzani. As president, he has worked on stabilizing Erbil-Baghdad relations, engaging diplomatically with neighboring nations, and tackling long-standing economic issues like budget disputes with the federal government. He is known for his practical and conciliatory approach to regional diplomacy.

Outside politics, Nechirvan Barzani founded the University of Kurdistan Hewler, the region's top university. His emphasis on higher education shows his commitment to building institutions in a region aiming to modernize and develop its human resources. His career reflects decades of changes in Iraqi Kurdistan, from the struggles of the Baathist era to the complex politics following Saddam Hussein’s fall.

Before Fame

Nechirvan Barzani was born into a very prominent family in Kurdish political history. His grandfather, Mustafa Barzani, was a key figure in 20th-century Kurdish nationalism, and his family's identity was closely tied to the Kurdish struggle for rights and autonomy in Iraq. Growing up in the 1960s and 1970s, he saw firsthand the cycles of revolt, suppression, and displacement that were part of Kurdish life under various Iraqi regimes. He studied at the University of Tehran, experiencing his formative years during the time of revolutionary Iran and regional instability.

He rose to political prominence through his deep involvement in the Kurdistan Democratic Party from a young age. After the collapse of Baathist rule in Iraq following the 1991 Gulf War, the creation of a Kurdish safe zone brought new political opportunities that allowed people like Nechirvan to take on formal governmental roles. He gained administrative experience in the KRG during the 1990s, a period marked by internal Kurdish conflict and the gradual building of regional self-governance, setting the stage for his future positions as a senior executive leader.
