Biography

Nemanja Vidić was born on October 21, 1981, in Užice, formerly part of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. Known for his strong physical presence and fierce competitive nature, he became one of football's most celebrated defenders. His career took him from the Serbian league to Russian football and then to Manchester United, where he spent eight years, won fifteen trophies, and became known as a leading centre-back of his era.

Vidić started his professional career at Red Star Belgrade in the early 2000s, quickly becoming known as a solid and skilled defender. His performances attracted European interest, leading to his 2004 transfer to Spartak Moscow in Russia. There, he adapted to a new style of play, and by 2006, he was on his way to the Premier League. In January 2006, Manchester United's manager, Sir Alex Ferguson, signed him for £7 million, a major move for the club.

At Manchester United, Vidić partnered with Rio Ferdinand to form one of the strongest defenses in European football. They helped United dominate English football for almost a decade. While at Old Trafford, Vidić won five Premier League titles, the UEFA Champions League, the FIFA Club World Cup, three League Cups, and five Community Shields. He became club captain in 2010, a position he held until 2014. He is one of only five players to win the Premier League Player of the Season award twice, and the only defender to do so, in the 2008–09 and 2010–11 seasons.

Internationally, Vidić played a significant role, starting with youth teams for Yugoslavia and moving on to represent Serbia and Montenegro, and later Serbia. He debuted on October 12, 2002, against Italy in the UEFA Euro 2004 qualifiers. A crucial part of the 'Famous Four' defense, he helped the team concede just one goal in ten matches during the 2006 World Cup qualifiers, setting a record. He retired from international football in October 2011.

After leaving Manchester United in 2014, Vidić joined Inter Milan in Italy's Serie A on a free transfer. Over two seasons, he was mostly a backup player due to injury issues, which eventually led to his retirement in January 2016. Even after retiring, his reputation remained strong, with many regarding him as one of the best defenders in football history.

Before Fame

Nemanja Vidić grew up in Užice, a city in western Serbia, during a time of significant political changes, economic difficulties, and armed conflict in Yugoslavia and Serbia throughout the 1990s. Despite these challenges, football remained a key part of Serbian culture, and the domestic league continued to produce talented players looking for opportunities both locally and internationally. Vidić developed through the youth system and entered professional football in Serbia when Red Star Belgrade was still the country's top club. Earning a spot there was a major achievement for any young Serbian player.

After proving himself at Red Star Belgrade in the early 2000s, Vidić caught the attention of Spartak Moscow and signed with the Russian club in 2004. His move to Russia was typical for Eastern European footballers of that time, who often sought to use Russian football as a pathway to the bigger leagues of Western Europe. During this period, Vidić honed the physical and organizational skills that defined his play at the highest level. His steady performances in Moscow convinced Sir Alex Ferguson to sign him for Manchester United in January 2006.
