Biography
Nguyễn Công Phượng was born on January 21, 1995, in Đô Lương, a district in Nghệ An province, Vietnam. He grew up in simple circumstances in one of Vietnam's most football-crazy regions, a place known for producing many notable Vietnamese footballers. From a young age, Phượng showed a natural talent for the game, catching attention with his technical skills, low center of gravity, and ability to maneuver through tight defenses with quick, decisive moves.
Phượng joined the HAGL – Arsenal JMG Academy, a collaboration between Hoang Anh Gia Lai Football Club and the Arsenal JMG global development network, aimed at finding and nurturing young Vietnamese football talent. The academy gave him structured coaching and exposure to modern football methods early in his career. He was promoted to the Hoang Anh Gia Lai senior team in 2015, quickly gaining the attention of Vietnamese football fans and media. That same year, he won the Best Young Player of the Year award, confirming his status as one of the most promising talents in Vietnamese football.
His playing style and slight build earned him the nickname 'Vietnamese Messi' among fans and journalists, reflecting both admiration and high expectations. Phượng primarily plays as a forward or attacking midfielder, known for his speed, close ball control, and precise finishing. He became a key player for both the Hoang Anh Gia Lai team and the Vietnamese national team, significantly contributing to the national team's efforts in regional and international competitions.
Phượng's career includes stints abroad in three countries. He had loan spells in Belgium, South Korea, and Japan, each testing his skills against tougher competition. Although these moves had mixed results regarding regular playing time, they broadened his professional experience and exposed him to different tactical systems and training cultures. His international experience is uncommon for Vietnamese players of his generation and helped him develop into a technically well-rounded footballer.
Later in his career, Phượng joined Truong Tuoi Dong Nai, playing in V.League 2, Vietnam's second division. Despite playing at a lower level, his impact on Vietnamese football remains strong. He has served as captain of the Vietnamese national team and became the team's leading scorer, highlighting his consistency and importance to Vietnamese football over more than a decade as a professional.
