Biography

Nguyễn Phú Trọng (14 April 1944 – 19 July 2024) was a Vietnamese leader and thinker known for his time as General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam from 2011 until his death in Hanoi. Born in Đông Anh, north of Hanoi, he led the country for more than a decade, overseeing the party's Secretariat, Politburo, and Central Military Commission. From 2018 to 2021, he also served as the tenth President of Vietnam, making him one of the few to hold both the top party and state roles at the same time in the nation's past.

Trọng joined the Communist Party of Vietnam in 1967, advancing mainly through the party's ideological and political channels. He studied at Vietnam National University and the Ho Chi Minh National Academy of Politics, gaining recognition as a devoted conservative Marxist-Leninist. He became part of the party's Central Committee in 1994 and its Politburo in 1997. From 2000 to 2006, he served as Party Secretary for Hanoi, the city's top party position, before taking the role of Chairman of the National Assembly from 2006 to 2011. He also joined Vietnam's National Assembly in 2002.

Trọng first became General Secretary at the party's 11th National Congress in 2011 and was re-elected at the 12th National Congress in 2016. He took on the presidency in 2018 after the passing of President Trần Đại Quang, and at the 13th National Congress in 2021, he secured a third term as General Secretary, a feat only matched by Hồ Chí Minh and Lê Duẩn. Nguyễn Xuân Phúc succeeded him in the presidency, while Trọng remained General Secretary until his death.

Trọng's time in office was marked by a major anti-corruption campaign that affected high-ranking officials at an unprecedented level in Vietnam. This campaign, driven by the 'burning the furnace' motto, led to the prosecution and removal of many senior party members and officials. His foreign policy, known as bamboo diplomacy, aimed to balance relations between major powers like the United States and China, aligning with Vietnam's strategy of strategic autonomy. During his leadership, Vietnam saw continued economic growth and greater international involvement. Trọng passed away on 19 July 2024 in Hanoi and was seen as one of the most significant Vietnamese leaders since Hồ Chí Minh.

Before Fame

Nguyễn Phú Trọng was born on April 14, 1944, in Đông Anh, a rural district north of Hanoi, during the last years of French colonial rule in Vietnam. His early life was marked by revolutionary struggle, national division, and war, which greatly influenced the generation of Vietnamese communist leaders to which he belonged. He studied at Vietnam National University and the Ho Chi Minh National Academy of Politics, the top institution for training party and state officials in Marxist-Leninist theory and governance.

Trọng joined the Communist Party of Vietnam in 1967, during the Vietnam War, and focused his early career on the party's ideological work rather than military service. He moved up steadily in roles centered on political theory and editorial work, including a long stint with the party journal Tạp chí Cộng sản. His strong background in intellectual and organizational aspects set him apart within the party and helped him advance through the Central Committee, Politburo, and eventually into the senior leadership positions he would hold for more than twenty years.
