Biography
Nguyễn Xuân Phúc was born on July 20, 1954, in Quế Sơn, a district in what is now Quảng Nam Province, central Vietnam. He grew up during the Vietnam War and a time of major political change in the country. He joined the Communist Party of Vietnam in November 1983, beginning a career that would lead him to the highest offices in the country. He studied economic management at Hanoi National Economics University from 1973 to 1978, later continuing his education at the National University of Singapore and the Vietnam National Administrative Academy.
From 1978 to 1993, Phúc worked as a civil servant in Quảng Nam-Đà Nẵng Province, moving up to deputy head of the provincial People's Committee. Over the next two decades, he took on various government roles and advanced quickly within the Communist Party at each Party Congress. He joined the Politburo in 2011 after the 11th Party Congress and became Deputy Prime Minister, establishing himself as a key economic leader in the party.
On April 5, 2016, Phúc was selected by President Trần Đại Quang to form a government and became Vietnam's seventh Prime Minister. During his tenure, Vietnam experienced strong economic growth, increased its involvement in global trade, and attracted significant foreign investment. He also led Vietnam's initial successful response to the COVID-19 pandemic starting in early 2020.
Phúc became Vietnam's 11th President on April 5, 2021, ranking second in the party hierarchy behind General Secretary Nguyễn Phú Trọng. As president, he worked on securing COVID-19 vaccine supplies from major nations and strengthened ties with South Korea in 2022. He served in the National Assembly during its 11th to 14th terms, maintaining a significant presence.
His presidency ended on January 18, 2023, when the National Assembly voted to dismiss him amid a larger anti-corruption campaign affecting senior levels of the Vietnamese government. His resignation marked the end of a four-decade career in public service. He had received the Order of José Martí from Cuba and was married to Trần Thị Nguyệt Thu.
