Biography
Slobodan Praljak was a Bosnian Croat military officer, engineer, TV and theater director, and businessman, known internationally for his role in the Yugoslav Wars and his conviction for war crimes. Born on January 2, 1945, in Čapljina, he studied at the University of Zagreb, earning degrees in electrical engineering, humanities and social sciences, and dramatic art. This varied education suited his diverse career in engineering, media, and business.
Praljak's military career started in 1991 when he volunteered for the newly formed Croatian Armed Forces during the Croatian War of Independence. He became a general and played a key role in the 1992-1994 Croat-Bosniak War, actions that later led to international legal charges. The International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) charged him with war crimes, crimes against humanity, and destroying cultural heritage aimed at the Bosniak population.
In 2004, Praljak surrendered to the ICTY to face charges for his wartime actions. The trial lasted nearly ten years, during which he was kept in detention. In 2013, he and five other Bosnian Croat officials were convicted and sentenced to 20 years in prison, with credit for time already served. His conviction included charges related to targeting civilians and destroying cultural sites during military operations.
Praljak's case ended dramatically in November 2017 when the ICTY Appeals Chamber upheld his conviction. Upon hearing the verdict, Praljak announced he rejected the court's decision and ingested potassium cyanide. He died shortly after at a hospital in The Hague on November 29, 2017, at the age of 72. His courtroom suicide made it one of the most shocking moments in international criminal trials and highlighted the lasting impact of the Yugoslav Wars on the region and its people.
Before Fame
Praljak grew up in Yugoslavia during the years after World War II when the country was rebuilding and modernizing under the leadership of Josip Broz Tito. His early years were marked by a time of relative stability and economic growth in Yugoslavia, which offered chances for higher education and career advancement across its different republics.
He rose to prominence through his work in television and theater direction, combined with his background in engineering and business activities. The start of the Yugoslav Wars in the early 1990s triggered his shift into military leadership, as the breakup of Yugoslavia resulted in new nation-states that needed armed forces and experienced leaders to protect their territories.
