Biography

Ivan Dodig, born on January 2, 1985, in Medjugorje, Croatia, is a former professional tennis player who excelled in doubles, reaching a career-high ranking of World No. 2 in September 2023. Regarded as one of the top doubles players of his era, he won seven Grand Slam titles in men's and mixed doubles.

Dodig's first Grand Slam win was at the 2015 French Open in men's doubles with Brazilian Marcelo Melo. He continued his success at the 2021 Australian Open with Slovak Filip Polášek and completed his Grand Slam collection at the 2023 French Open with American Austin Krajicek. In mixed doubles, he was equally successful, winning the French Open in 2018 and 2019 with Taiwanese Latisha Chan, and the 2019 Wimbledon with her as well. He added the 2022 Australian Open mixed doubles title with French Kristina Mladenovic.

Outside of Grand Slams, Dodig won 24 doubles titles on the ATP Tour, including six at the Masters 1000 level. He reached the final of the 2014 ATP World Tour Finals, showing his skill in top-level tennis. His talent in doubles was highlighted by a silver medal at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo with Croatian Marin Čilić.

While Dodig was best known for his doubles achievements, he also saw success in singles early in his career. He achieved a career-high singles ranking of World No. 29 in October 2013 and won his only ATP singles title at the 2011 Zagreb Indoors. His best singles Grand Slam performance was reaching the fourth round at Wimbledon in 2013. Since 2010, Dodig has been a key player for Croatia in the Davis Cup, helping the team to their first Davis Cup title in 2018.

Before Fame

Growing up in Medjugorje, a small town in Bosnia and Herzegovina that later became part of Croatia's sports scene, Dodig honed his tennis skills during a time of major political and social change in the Balkans. His early years matched up with Croatia's emergence as an independent nation and its rising status in international tennis.

Dodig started his journey to professional tennis in the early 2000s, a time when Croatian tennis was thriving, with players like Goran Ivanišević achieving great success. This environment inspired and supported young Croatian players like Dodig to aim for professional careers, eventually leading him to specialize in doubles, where his strategic thinking and court positioning proved most effective.
