Biography
Paetongtarn Shinawatra was born on 21 August 1986 in Bangkok, Thailand, into a well-known political family. She is the youngest child of Thaksin Shinawatra, Thailand's 23rd prime minister, and the niece of Yingluck Shinawatra, the 28th prime minister. She attended Saint Joseph Convent School and Mater Dei School in Bangkok, then went on to Chulalongkorn University in Thailand and the University of Surrey in the UK. She also completed courses at the National Defence College of Thailand. In 2005, she earned the Gold Medal of the Direkgunabhorn. She is married to Pitaka Suksawat.
After finishing her studies, Paetongtarn entered the business world before moving into politics, following her father and aunt. She became a leading figure in the Pheu Thai Party, linked closely to the Shinawatra family, and became the party's leader in 2023. Her entry into politics came during a tumultuous time in Thailand, with the country dealing with tensions between elected governments and other institutional powers.
In 2024, Paetongtarn became Thailand's Prime Minister, the 31st person to hold the office and the youngest prime minister. She was also the second woman to serve, after her aunt Yingluck, and the first prime minister with a parent who also held the office. She started serving as Minister of Culture on 30 June 2025, while still being prime minister.
Her time as prime minister ended amidst a political and legal crisis caused by a leaked phone call with former Cambodian leader Hun Sen. The call, related to a border conflict between Thailand and Cambodia, led to criticism from opponents who claimed she was too deferential to a foreign leader. On 1 July 2025, the Constitutional Court suspended her from office as they prepared a ruling, with Deputy Prime Minister Suriya Juangroongruangkit stepping in as acting prime minister. On 29 August 2025, the Constitutional Court voted 6 to 3 to remove her from office permanently. She also resigned as leader of the Pheu Thai Party in 2025, before being removed.
Before Fame
Paetongtarn Shinawatra was raised in Bangkok in a family deeply involved in Thai politics. Her father, Thaksin Shinawatra, became a key figure in the country in the early 2000s, and the political movements linked to him influenced much of Thailand's politics for the next 20 years. Growing up in this setting, Paetongtarn was exposed to politics early on, although she initially pursued education and a career in business.
After finishing secondary school at Saint Joseph Convent School and Mater Dei School, she graduated from Chulalongkorn University, one of Thailand's top universities, and later studied at the University of Surrey in England. She also attended the National Defence College of Thailand, a step often connected with political and public service goals. These experiences helped her shift from business to a political career, leading to her appointment as prime minister in 2024.
